Earlier this week, Jennifer M. Contino of The Pulse, conducted an interview with 2006 Joe Shuster Award Winner, J. Torres. The interview also reveals that J. Torres will re-team with J. Bone for an upcoming issue of Batman: The Brave and the Bold (the two are the team behind, Alison Dare, Little Miss Adventures).

One of the best new superhero animated series to hit in a while is Batman: Brave and the Bold. Just as fun as those cartoon team-ups with a silver age feel is the comic book version of the series. J. Torres is the new writer of Batman and pals adventures. He couldn’t wait to get his hand on these characters and his mind was spinning from the get-go with who to team the Dark Knight Detective with. He was also happy to be able to reunite with his past collaborator J. Bone for an upcoming issue. In just his first few pairings, Torres is teaming Batman with Captain Marvel, the Doom Patrol, Kid Eternity and a whole lot more!

I may not be well known, but I can’t say that the comics industry hasn’t embraced my work. I’ve been honored with winning the 2005 Oni Press Talent Search, an Eisner nomination for “The Process,” an invitation to join the prestigious online collective, Act-i-vate (www.act-i-vate.com) and much more. One thing I’m really excited about is my recent Marvel short story for the recently announced “Uncanny X-Men First Class!”

Ken Steacy: Modern Myths & Icons art show in Victoria, BC until March 28

From the The martlett: The University of Victoria’s Independant Newspaper:

What: Modern Myths and Icons: The Comic Art of Ken Steacy

Where: Winchester Galleries, 2260 Oak Bay Road, Victoria BC

When: now until March 28

In his 35-year career as a comic book illustrator/author, Ken Steacy never thought he would have his work displayed in a fancy art gallery. But from March 8 to 28, Victoria’s Winchester Galleries will do just that, hosting “Modern Myths and Icons: The Comic Art of Ken Steacy.”

The exhibit is a retrospective look at Steacy’s career and the role of the artist in the comic book industry. Over the years, Steacy has illustrated prolific pop culture icons like Spiderman, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Astro Boy, X-Men and Batman in his signature style — vibrant colours, dramatic lines and incredibly expressive, almost cartoon-like faces. His work always conveys the sense of action and fun that comics were made for.

Not Happenings: Paradise Toronto Con postponed until 2010

Announced publicly today on the Paradise Toronto Comicon website:

3/23/2009

Sorry it has taken so long to send you information on the 2009 Paradise Toronto Comicon. As some of you remember the only available date was the July 4th weekend. After some discussions with a number of you, it has been decided that putting a show on that weekend would not be wise. Reasons for this are summer vacations, camp and cottage season as well as a lack of interest from American dealers and possible attendees.

I have been in discussions with the Hyatt Regency (formerly the Holiday Inn) and the only other date they could offer was our Thanksgiving weekend. The dates we had been looking towards have been late October and November.

Unfortunately it looks like we are going to have postpone our show for this year. We will definitely be working towards doing a show in 2010. With all the upheaval of shows in the next few years (Wizard moving and canceling shows, and Reed Expositions expanding into Chicago and moving their New York dates) we will be working on moving into an open timeslot. Hopefully we will be making our 2010 announcement in early January of 2010.

Thanks to everyone for their support and patience and we look forward to being back in 2010 stronger then ever.

Please feel free to contact us with any question

Canadian comic book character Dan Cooper may have inspired hijacker “D.B. Cooper”

dan_cooper_pocket_1A National Post article by Randy Boswell reports that the FBI have revealed that the name and escape method of infamous airline hijacker D.B. Cooper may have been inspired by French Canadian comic hero Dan Cooper of the Royal Canadian Air Force:

An FBI agent probing one of the bureau’s most famous cold cases — the 1971 disappearance of hijacker-parachutist “D.B. Cooper” somewhere over the U.S. Pacific Northwest — has announced a bizarre development in the investigation: a new theory that the mystery man’s name and escape method were inspired by a French comic book’s Canadian hero.

Prompted by Internet chatter about the case, which continues to fascinate legions of amateur sleuths nearly 40 years after Cooper parachuted from a hijacked passenger jet with $200,000 in ransom money, Seattle-based FBI agent Larry Carr laid out the possible Canadian connection this week on the bureau’s website.

Pointing to the 1960s-era French-language comic book character Dan Cooper — a Royal Canadian Air Force test pilot who battles enemies on Earth and in space — Mr. Carr says the mystery hijacker may have adopted the superhero’s name and been inspired by a particular cover showing the Canuck pilot on a parachute jump.

The parachuting issue was “published near the date of the hijacking,” the FBI notes, adding that the hijacker — while popularly known as “D.B. Cooper” because of a news reporter’s error after the crime took place — actually identified himself as “Dan Cooper” when he first boarded the plane at the airport in Portland, Ore.

The rest of the article can be read by clicking the link above.

cooperDan Cooper by Belgian Cartoonist Albert Weinberg (1922-) appeared originally in the weekly TINTIN Magasin. The Cooper strip started in 1954 and the stories have been collected into over 40 Dan Cooper graphic novels by various publishers including Editions du Lombard, Editions Fleurus, Editions Novedi (distributed by Hachette), Dargaud, Editions Loup, and is currently published by Editions Hibou in Europe.
