David Finch on… Strawberry Shortcake?

strawberrycolorprogressNewsarama talks to David Finch about his entry for this Saturday’s “Gag Me With a Toon 2: Harder, Faster, Radder” art show in Los Angeles.

For a look into the process of creating the painting, check out Finch’s blog.. Finch writes:

I’m working on a Strawberry Shortcake on My Little Pony, all done Frazetta style. It’s going to be a ridiculous looking painting, so I’m having a blast with it. I’ve put up an image of what I managed to get drawn while watching tv last night. I’ll put up progress as I go along. The drawing still needs some skulls, spears, maybe some heads on sticks….we’ll see. I want it to be very dark and angry. Too much fun for words. Also, the final painting will be much larger on canvas, so I’ll be able to give the picture a lot more room to breathe than what I’ve got on paper here.

The show is May 2, and it opens at 7pm. I really hope that some of you can make it to the show. It’s going to be a lot of fun with good people, and I’m going to bring some copies of my new sketchbook that I’ll give out to the first few people who say they came because they read about the show in my blog.

CBR: Dale Eaglesham’s Final Bow on the JSA

The Justice Society of America by Dale Eaglesham, from JSA Annual #1 (2008)

The Justice Society of America by Dale Eaglesham, from JSA Annual #1 (2008)

Comic Book Resources’ Jeffrey Renaud had a chance to talk with Dale Eaglesham about his final issue of JSA (#26 – in stores TODAY) and his upcoming work on Marvel’s Fantastic Four.

CBR News checked in with Eaglesham for some parting thoughts on “JSA,” and learned the Canadian penciller’s final issue was to include a dedication on the last page, but due to various reasons, it was left out. That dedication was to read thus:

I dedicate this issue and my entire JSA run to my late father, who introduced me to the wondrous world of art. The day he drew me a “cat-man” made of circles when I was six years old, my life changed forever. It’s been a magical ride ever since. — Dale, December 31, 2008

Schedule Change

Although it was previously announced that we would be revealing the four Hall of Fame inductees and the Comics for Kids Award nominees on Friday, May 1st — both organizing committees have asked for a brief extension — the information  will be released as soon as we receive the green light.

Back from Calgary

This afternoon Peter Fisico and I returned from our visit to Alberta for the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo. Thanks to organizers Kandrix and Ken and the rest of the Calgary Expo staff and volunteers for putting on such a great convention! It was fun to meet the many Albertans who came by to visit the Joe Shuster Awards booth and it was great to see (and in some cases meet for the first time in person) many of the people who have helped out the Joe Shuster Awards in the past, like Stephen Fuller (Nominating Committee 2007 and Hall of Fame Nominating Committee 2008), Jay Bardyla and Shawna Roe (Nominating Committee 2009) and Leonard Wong (Nominating Committee 2005).

The Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo was chock full of Canadian comic book creators and we had some great talks with many people there such as Laurie B., Darwyn Cooke, Steve Rolston, Fiona Staples, Marcus To, Svetlana Chmakova, Ray Fawkes, Scott Hepburn and the guys from Red 5 Comics, just to name a handful. We also received some entries for the Gene Day Award and some pieces for the Visions Gallery.

Big thanks to Peter for enduring my snoring and for getting a copy of the stunning 2009 Calgary Con art book signed by many of the contributors and for representing me at the charity auction where I scored a fantastic framed piece by guest Shane Glines.

Upon return I had some time to catch up with Dave Sim, who has done a Wolverine painted piece for the Visions Gallery that I will be picking up next weekend. Dave also mentioned that the Cerebus Archive #2 Zombie Obama Variant solicited in the latest Previews is not going to be reprinted, so if you want a copy, you better place an order with your comics retailer!

Calgary Herald Spotlights Calgarian Creators

North 40 #1 Cover by Fiona Staples

North 40 #1 Cover by Fiona Staples

Source: Comic Book crusader (Calgary Herald)

With the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo this weekend, Terence Leung (of the Calgary Herald) writes about comic book creators that have come from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Featured in the article, Fiona Staples, Marcus To and Laurie Breitkreuz.

Also mentioned in this article: Todd McFarlane, John Byrne, Andrew Foley, Riley Rossmo and Cary Nord.

As movies such as Iron Man, Sin City and the upcoming Wolverine film rack up huge dollar signs in the theatres, it’s well documented the appeal of comic books are no longer for the nerdy, pocket-protector equipped basement dweller folk.

Comic book talent has come through Calgary such as Spawn creator Todd Mc-Farlane and John Byrne of X-Men fame, but a growing number of artists are finding success independently or with large publishers such as DC, Top Cow and Marvel.

Fiona Staples, a recent visual communications graduate at Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD), has both feet in the independent publishing world in Calgary and also as an artist for publisher Wild-Storm–which is owned by DC Comics, home of Batman and Superman.

Source: Doom Patrol Blog

J. Torres and J. Bone team-up again, in issue #7 of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which will see release in July 2009.

MGA80: The two of you have worked together before – for the readers’ sake – when was that?

Torres: It was about 7 or 8 years ago on Alison Dare, a series about the Indiana Jones-like adventures of a girl whose mother was a world famous explorer and father was a superhero called the Blue Scarab. Oni Press published the original miniseries and one shots, and then collected them in two trades. But next year, Tundra, the children’s book publisher not the former comic publisher, will be reprinting the collections.

Amazing Spider-Man 600

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

Our goal remains constant: to develop new readers for the literature of comic books and to maintain their interest with the best in reading.

What has been one of the most rewarding parts of running your business?

Satisfied customers who want to read more.

What has been one of the biggest challenges?

Maintaining sufficient inventory of titles, especially the ones we recommend most often.

Why are you a comics retailer?

We share a life-long love of the medium in all its aspects: the characters, the writers, the artists, the history; we love illustration in all its forms from decorative to caricature; we love good stories told with pictures and words.

Comic book,   Graphic novels,  Books and magazines about the history, art and literature of comic books and graphic novels.

What percentage of your business is comics compared to the peripherals of a ‘culture store’?

100%.  We do not do peripherals.  We like to say “Legends put the ‘book’ back in ‘comic book.’”

What books do you find yourself recommending the most?

Criminal

Watchmen

The Killing Joke

Ghost World

What great comic/manga should everyone under 14 be reading?

Bone.

What comic/manga would you recommend for an adult interested in returning to comics?

Watchmen

Maus

How important is the web to your business?

Not important

Does your store have an area of expertise? What makes your store unique?

We make it our business to know and understand the form and content of all the books we carry.  We are also devoted to vintage comics and collectibles.  We have one of the highest ratings of any eBay merchant of vintage comics with extensive experience in grading and knowledge of key titles and issues.

Describe the comic book scene within your community? (e.g.: amateur comics, anime/manga clubs, comic clubs, convention events)

Owner Gareth Gaudin is the writer and publisher of his own comic, “The Magic Teeth Dailies,” starring “The Perogy Cat,” an endeavour of over fifteen years. His work and inter-action with the community has been a source of pleasure and inspiration to many locals and customers who directly attribute their own forays into self-publishing to his example. He has also teaches classes in cartooning to students at The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Vancouver Island School of Art.

ad-with-nine-panels1

Do you participate in Free Comic Book Day?

Begrudgingly!  We find it is mostly a mob scene that leads to little development of market or interest.

What aspect of your store are you most proud?

Our reputation.  When we suggest a book to a customer we find they buy it, saying “you never steer me wrong”.

legends-interior-gareth

What have been some or your best/most fun promotions/events?

We just hosted a book signing for fantasy artist/storyteller Iain McCaig who regaled fans with his book  “Shadowline” containing the designs he has created for George Lucas (Star Wars), Stephen Spielberg (Hook, Harry Potter) and many other Hollywood blockbusters.  It has also been our pleasure to host Canadian auteurs Seth, Chester Brown and Dave Cooper.

Have the last few years of Hollywood film releases changed your customer base?

Buffy Season 8 brought a lot of TV fans into the store, seeking their favourite character and in the end discovering a new world of entertainment.  Watchmen did the same with movie-goers.  We do not find that the super hero adaptations, while excellent and stoking the pleasure fires for ongoing fans, have brought in new readers to any extent.

Graphic Novels have been a growth product for large bookstore chains, does this affect your customer base or business?

It is nice that the main titles are stocked in the big stores because when their customers enjoy graphic storytelling they generally find their way to Legends where they can gain some real knowledge of the medium and get introduced to further reading.

J. Torres interviewed at Comic Book Resources

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #6 Cover. Issue written by J. Torres

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #6 Cover. Issue written by J. Torres

One of the 2009 Joe Shuster Awards Nominees, J. Torres, was interviewed by Comic Book Resources’ Jeffrey Renaud.

In January, DC Comics launched a companion series, “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” and come June a new writer comes on board in J. Torres.

No stranger to kid-friendly fare, Torres previously enjoyed a long run on “Teen Titans Go!,” based on the animated TV series “Teen Titans.” He also recently landed himself a nomination for a Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Book Creator Award for his overall work in 2008 on such titles as “The Family Dynamic,” “Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century” and “Wonder Girl.”
