Jim Munroe and Shannon Gerard have released the second issue of Sword of My Mouth — but this one is only available to online subscribers.

Here’s the good news: This is not like when you missed the latest issue of Blackest Night and had no idea what was going on. Sword of My Mouth is a digital subscription, it’s never too late to join!

The Bear Stories Vol. 2 drops at FanExpo

Much has been made of the changes in Diamond Comics minimum order levels and the effect this will have on the small press. Independent retailers (aka, your local comic book store) as well as small publishers and self-publishers in Canada have the potential to be harshly impacted. Here’s to supporting the efforts of these creators:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jul 12, 2009 – The Bear is back and the depravity continues! Coming August 2009, the 56 page full colour issue of The Bear Stories Volume Two will be available for order both through DMF Comics and online at www.thebearstories.com. Not for the easily offended, prepare for shock, awe, and laughs in this glimpse into a day in the life of the foul mouthed Bear. Picking up from the May 2008 release of The Bear Stories Volume One, Volume Two continues the adventures of the degenerate and naïve Bear as he crosses path with a random cross-section of characters, not the least of which are The Bear’s favourite: the ladies. Hilarious and explosive encounters between The Bear and everyone else he meets continue to highlight the incongruity of a giant grinning bear running rampant among the ordinary citizens of a teeming urban metropolis.

The Bear Stories Volume Two also includes a bonus feature, the short and gorgeously illustrated existentialist story ‘Tod’.

bearstories2

Fans will get a chance to purchase The Bear Stories Volume Two directly from the creators at the upcoming Toronto Fan Expo Canada (August 28-30) but act fast. The Bear Stories Volume One has sold out in record numbers at previous conventions.

For a peek into the bizarre and perverse mind of The Bear, visit his blog at www.thebearstories.com.

Not for the faint of heart, there is a new trailer for Bear Stories Volume 2.

“We are very excited about Bear Stories Volume #2 being released at Fan Expo Canada 2009 this summer” says Jason Park, publisher of DMF Comics. “George and Chris have outdone themselves with volume #2- it’s funnier, has more characters, and more crazy situations that Bear gets into. Fans will be happy to know that they can pre-order now at dmfcomics.com.”

About Elsewhere Media
From their earliest collaboration in 1996 on a first person role playing video game, Chris Hatzopolous and George Todorovski have continued to explore unique avenues to provide offbeat and amusing entertainment to their audience. Pushing the boundaries of taste, their first adventure with The Bear was in a self-published zine released in 1998. In May 2008 the first full length issue of The Bear Stories Volume One was released, selling out at conventions and gaining nearly instant cult status. With combined backgrounds in traditional illustration, graphic design and digital animation, Hatzopolous and Todorovski are dedicated to using multi-media to bring their own brand of outlandish humour to as wide an audience as possible. Independently, George’s work “The Living City” has appeared in Vol. 33 No. 3 of Heavy Metal Magazine and Chris’s original music can be heard at Oxvylu.com.

Retailers can order through DMF Comics online or directly from Elsewhere Media.

Behind the scenes: Hal Foster and Prince Valiant

Fantagraphics publisher Kim Thompson, who recently released the lovely, and large, Prince Valiant Vol. 1: 1937-1938, by Hal Foster, has discovered a startling difference with one of the originally published pages: more violence!

Unlike many archival projects which scan and digitally clean up the original newspaper pages themselves (I’m thinking of the stunningly gorgeous Winsor McCay reprint books by both Sunday Press and Checker), Fantagraphics are using the colour proofs from The Syndicate. As a result, at least one of the pages contained in the book reveal a page as-originally-intended, but never published.

Prince Valiant Vol. 1: 1937-1938, by Fantagraphics, (and those McCay Nemo books) are available through your local comic book store. I own all of the above titles and if you are interested in the foundations of sequential art, with work by artists still considered masters of the medium, these are the books for you.

Scott Pilgrim: The Video Game

In his cunning ongoing effort to take over the world, Brian Lee O’Malley reveals the some details of the recently announced Scott Pilgrim video game.

“Video games have been a huge influence on the characters and world of Scott Pilgrim,” said Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of the original graphic novels. “As a gamer myself, it is a true pleasure to work closely with the talented team at Ubisoft to bring Scott to life on video game screens worldwide.”

O’Malley also reveals:

“The game is still in the very early stages … we only officially “did the deal” in the past few weeks and it’s maybe 3-4 weeks into development right now.”

Canadians out to “Kill Shakespeare”

Publisher’s Weekly has a story on the upcoming IDW series Kill Shakespeare.

Created by Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery with art by Andy Belanger, a veteran of DC Comics, Devil’s Due and other comics publishers, Kill Shakespeare started out as a brainstorm idea for a videogame and then a film before the two creators realized that a comic would be the perfect way to launch the project. “Our goal is to redefine Shakespeare. Everyone knows his plays,” said Del Col, “his work is kind of pre-existing knowledge; people know the characters and plots even if they haven’t actually seen or read the plays.”

Back from San Diego

After a grueling day of travel, I’m slowly getting things back to normal after the five-day San Diego gauntlet. I’m afraid that since I was booth-bound for the majority of the show I wasn’t able to gather up much intel (and the stuff that I did is not my place to announce), but I did see a lot of Canadians around the show and had some great talks with people in different aspects of the industry.

I do have some news that I’ll be sharing shortly about the ceremony location.

I did manage to snag for myself one of the snazzy limited edition numbered versions of Darwyn Cooke’s adaptation of The Hunter and read that on the plane home and loved it. In honour of the book I picked up DVD copies of Point Blank and Payback (two Hollywood versions of the same Westlake novel).

I also got a copy of Boom!’s limited edition Incredibles hardcover.

Canadians in the July Previews

Man, it’s getting down to the wire here. By no means will this list be complete, but this is an idea whose time has come.

Beyond giving out our yearly awards, CCBCAA’s mandate is to promote the work of Canadians in the industry, so here we go:

Retailers must have their Diamond orders uploaded by 11:59pm, Tuesday, July 28, so you best get your pre-orders in ASAP.

Prices in the Diamond catalogue are listed in US$. Every store has their own currency exchange policy, expect the price to vary.

Canadian Comic Book Creators News from San Diego Comic Con International – Part 3

Source: Newsarama: SDCC ’09: A Darker Shade of Ink: Crime and Noir in Comics
- Darwyn Cooke is one of creators on the panel, discussing crime and noir in comics.

Source: Newsarama: SDCC 09: Graphic Novels and Novelists
- Seth and Bryan Lee O’Malley are two of the panelists, discussing graphic novels.

“A fan asked how cultural background influenced the sequential elements of the form.

Seth, being Canadian, decided that that must be why his books are boring. But then Bryan Lee O’Malley cited himself as Canadian, blowing that argument out of the water. O’Malley then said it’s hard to look at your own work and see those things, and left it up to others.”

- Spotlight on Bryan Lee O’Malley, moderated by Scott McCloud.

“Scott Pilgrim #6 will likely be released in 2010″

Source: Comic Book Resources: CCI: Scott Pilgrim: The Video Game
- Bryan Lee O’Malley discusses the upcoming Scott Pilgrim video game, which will coincide with the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe movie.

“Universal hooked up with a number of different publishers, and we ended up going with Ubisoft. We talked about having an old school video game feeling like the books. That’s something we talked about with Universal, and Ubisoft has more to do with that idea, that aesthetic. We’re happy about it.”

Source: Comic Book Resources: CCI: The Image Comics Panel
- Robert Kirkman announces that David Finch will be illustrating the cover to Invincible Returns one-shot.

“The focus then shifted to Robert Kirkman as he discussed the future of three of his projects. “It’s a bold, new era for Invincible,” he exclaimed, revealing a David Finch-illustrated cover to “Invincible Returns” #1, a special one-shot issue that sees Mark Grayson returning to his original yellow costume. “

Source: Comic Book Resources: CCI: McFarlane Pencils “Spawn” #200
Todd McFarlane discusses Spawn #200, where he will write, pencil, and ink the issue. The issue is scheduled for a 2010 release.

“It’s issue #200, a big anniversary book, so I thought I’d come in there,” McFarlane told CBR News of his return to “Spawn’s” pencil-based interiors. “I’ve got some ideas for the story where I might have some pages done by guest artists for some flashback sequences. I’d do the A-story, and then within the confines of that there would be three or four little B-snippet flashbacks. So it’d kind of put together an all-star team, but until I get them to fully commit, I’ll hold off on the names.”

Source: Comic Book Resources: CCI Exclusive: Kirkman and McFarlane on “Haunt”
- Robert Kirkman and Todd McFarlane discuss their new creation, to be released by Images Comics starting October 2009.

“”We’ve had some fits and starts, and some false starts,” admitted McFarlane. “I didn’t want to be in a position where I put out a solicitation for the sake of putting out a solicitation. That’s too easy. I keep telling my Image partners that that’s the easiest thing that anybody can do in comic books. The hard part is delivering a book on time that’s of high quality, and maybe even delaying the solicitation so that you can hype it a little bit more. I know it’s been a little frustrating to Robert, but it’s already been two years – what’s two years and one month? We gotta do it. We gotta get it right. We gotta get this thing down. So him and I knocked down some of the big issues both creatively and on a business-marketing level, and now I’m inking the cover for issue #2. ‘Haunt’ has been given birth.”"

“Some more catch-up, Aaron on Yanick Paquette’s art in Weapon X: “He gets to draw some of the craziest stuff you’ve ever seen in a Wolverine book.” “

Source: Comic Book Resources: CCI: Kirman and McFarlane on “Image United”

“Perhaps a better person to weigh in on the hard work going into “Image United” is Todd McFarlane, the “Spawn” creator representing 1/6th of the drawing force. “It’s easy to jump onto ['Image United'] in theory, but then all of the sudden you get to the reality of actually having to do it,” he said about tackling the series. “It’s a bit of a nuisance in the way that everybody has a sort of 9-5 job, we’ve all got our other books that we gotta get out. These pages kind of come from heaven and all of a sudden it’s like, ‘I’ve gotta get it done. Okay, okay, I’ll get it done.’ But I’ve found that once I get to those pages, it’s a breath of fresh air.”"

Source: Newsarama: SDCC 09 – The Image Comics Show

“The panel shifted back to [McFarlane] who mentioned the hallmark issue of Spawn #200—comparing his series to the likes of Cerebus because of its prolific run. He then revealed that he would also be penciling and inking the entire issue of #200 for his fans and that he hoped to bring in the other Founding Fathers of Image for pieces of flashback material.”

Source: Newsarama: SDCC 09 – Disney’s New PRINCE (of Persia)

“[Bernard] Chang chimed in that he’s biting that image for a scene in his story, and, like any Prince of Persia fan, loves the spike pit, promising some homages. “

“Cameron Stewart’s chapter has a story dealing directly with the Prince, and a slide showed some in progress work. Some of the chapters will deal with peripheral characters, however.”

“Bernard Chang’s tale will be one of Dastan himself, and Tommy Lee Edwards’ is one of Tamina, the princess who runs around with Prince during film. She’s the keeper of the sands.

Chang: “For me, I used to be a Disney Imagineer, with a degree in architecture, so I’m psyched for things like the spike pit. I look forward to the depth of world in this. It’s a lot of fun to illustrate the run-through of this rich world and environment.”"

“Tom Fowler will be drawing the larger framing sequence. “

Source: /Film: Comic-Con: Scott Pilgrim, the Video Game!

“This had to happen. I hoped that word would ’slip out’ during the “Spotlight on Bryan Lee O’Malley” panel today at Comic Con. That didn’t happen, as the panel focused more on O’Malley’s art and history (entirely appropriate, really) but Attack of the Show broke the news, so it’s out in the wild. Hooray! UbiSoft is making a Scott Pilgrim video game to coincide with the release of Edgar Wright’s film. It’s a downloadable side-scrolling old-school beat-em-up. Sounds like a good way to get some of the scenes that didn’t make it into the film onto screens anyway. This is a ’soft’ announcement; expect more details from UbiSoft next week.”

Congratulations to Ian Boothby (Writer, and Canadian), Nina Matsumoto (Penciller), and Andrew Pepoy (Inker) for their Eisner Award win under the Best Short Story category, for their story “Murder He Wrote” in The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror #14, published by Bongo Comics. Steve Rolston interviewed at The Fabler Blog

Ghost Projekt Preview by Steve Rolston

Ghost Projekt Preview by Steve Rolston

Source: The Fabler Blog

Kevin de Vlaming (of The Fabler Blog) has posted an interview with Steve Rolston.

The Fabler interviewed Rolston about Emiko Superstar, his early inspirations, and his upcoming comic Ghost Projekt (with Joe Harris). He also shared some insight on his experiences teaching a course on comic book production at Van Arts, along with a few words of wisdom that he imparts to his students each semester.

The interview is below:

KD: What are the earliest comics you can remember taking an interest in?

SR: I used to read a lot of Archie when I was a little kid. I also used to read Alf comics, and Madballs – stuff like that. That’s the earliest stuff I can remember. Then of course, like a lot of kids, I stopped reading comics for a few years until I was a teenager. That’s when I really got into it. But Archie definitely planted the seeds.

Jeff Lemire interviewed by Wired.Com’s Underwire

Jeff Lemire - The Nobody
Source: Wired.Com: Underwire

Jeff Lemire doesn’t write conventional comics. Often slow-paced and sketchy, his works are also intractably personal and deeply moving, even if he’s writing about the Invisible Man.

“I draw on a lot of cinematic influences like Ingmar Bergman and Wim Wenders, artists who let a story take its time,” the Toronto-based writer and artist told Wired.com ahead of his Comic-Con International appearances in San Diego on Thursday and Friday. “Comics are a visual medium, and visuals should be allowed to tell some of that story.”

Gus, the lead character, in Lemire’s “Sweet Tooth” earned an appreciation of cuteness from Berger although as the artist explained, the series won’t dwell on cuteness. A human/deer hybrid, Gus roams a post-apocalyptic America ruined by the creation of hybrid animals…and a world he’s never lived in. The naivete of the character will lead him down some distressing paths over the course of the first arc.

Electronic Arts is at Comic-Con promoting, among other video games, Army of Two: The 40th Day, in which much rides on the moral choices made by the two players.

To help illustrate the long-term impact of those decisions, the developers brought in artists Chris Bachalo and Jock to provide sequences of still images that show how those actions play out.

Destructoid has a slick promotional video for The 40th Day, plus a couple of illustrations by the artists. The game’s website also has a press release about Bachalo and Jock.

D+Q and Dan Clowes

Comics Reporter and the D+Q blog announce a great coup: Drawn + Quarterly has acquired the publishing rights to Daniel Clowes’ next graphic novel, Wilson.

D+Q, the three time winner of the Joe Shuster Award for Outstanding Publisher, has added another great talent to the publishing line-up

D+Q provided a statement from its publisher and editor-in-chief, Chris Oliveros: “As a long-time fan of Eightball, it is thrilling to be able to publish Dan … Wilson is signature Clowes as the cartooning is seamless. It is funny, poignant and leaves an indelible impression on the reader.”

Wilson is slated for a May 2010 release.

Raincoast Books, and surely Diamond Comics, will distribute the work.
