Interview with Graham Annable – what is a Grickle?

Chris Mautner at Comic Book Resources talked to cartoonist Graham Annable about the upcoming release of “The Book of Grickle” from Dark Horse Comics.

Q. What’s the significance of “Grickle” anyway? Does it mean anything in particular?

A. Grickle is a nickname, amongst a billion nicknames, that my father used for me as a kid. Pretty much every week he’d have new ones he’d be trying out on me and my sister. Grickle is the one that really stuck with me. When I put together the first self-published booklet of short stories I was really perplexed as to what to title the whole thing. Grickle just felt right. And it still does.

Q. Give me a little bit of background/biography. Where did you grow up? How did you get interested in art and comics? What made you decide to take the leap into becoming a professional cartoonist?

A. I grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Basically at the Northern tip of Michigan on the Canadian side. From an early age I’ve been a hoarder of books. Especially paperback collections. I had stacks and stacks of Peanuts and Archie digests. I think a lot of that stuff affected my brain. When I was about to graduate from high school I was seriously considering going into biology. But as I was looking over my science books I realized they were almost all illegibly covered in doodles. I decided at that point that I’d try and pursue cartoons instead.

* The other two milestone issues that month are Superman #700 and Wonder Woman #700

2010 JSA Master of Ceremonies: Jonathan Llyr Returns

Returning as Master of Ceremonies in 2010 is Jonathan Llyr.

Jonathan Llyr is one of the most recognizable geeks in Canada today. As host of the nationally broadcast SPACE Channel’s SPACEY AWARDS for their first five years, Jon earned the respect of Hardcore Nerds everywhere when, over the years, Richard Dean Anderson had him ‘thrown off’ the set of STARGATE SG-1 (with a bonus instruction of “one shot to the kneecaps”), Bruce Campbell attacked him in the woods behind his house with a chainsaw, and Katee Sackhoff let him climb into her Viper.

Jon got his start on TV in 1998, after years of honing his skills as a professional actor and the artistic director of the Shakespearean theatre company, Tempest Theatre Group, SPACE needed someone who would wear a rubber turtle shell on his head (shades of Alan Rickman in GALAXY QUEST, anyone?) and it was a perfect fit. So, for several years, Jon appeared weekly on the cult TV show SPACEBAR as Grot, the loveably clueless alien barfly cum barkeep. Eventually trading shell for battered orange ball-cap, Jon was then seen five nights a week on DRIVE-IN CLASSICS as the genially pontificating drive-in theatre projectionist, Drive-in Dick – font of all B-movie knowledge and wisdom.

Jon’s subsequent stint as host, reporter and interviewer for HYPASPACE and HYPASPACE WEEKLY put him in close contact with stars like Patrick Stewart, Andy Serkis, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy (at the same time in what proved to be an awesome media scoop!), David Hayter, Jolene Blalock, George Takei, Tricia Helfer, Steven Spielberg and many others.

Heading out into strange, new worlds with The HardcoreNerdity Network is his latest challenge.

None of this is surprising, considering Jonathan’s formative years. When he was a kid, his mom used to write him sick-notes so he could ditch school and line up on opening day for STAR TREK movies. She let him glue his Lego together in the shape of a phaser and paint it silver. She looked the other way when he put her good oven mitts on his feet so that he could be ‘Cornelius’ from PLANET OF THE APES. She made the rest of the family be quiet as he sat in front of the t.v., painstakingly making audio-cassette recordings of STAR TREK episodes so he could play them back at bedtime. That was in the days before VCRs. And when the family got one of those – Jon’s mom bought him his very first movie. It was SUPERMAN. And she let him stay home from school (again) to watch it before she wrapped it up as his Christmas present (he had to promise to look surprised when he opened it). So, really? This is all her fault.

Visions of an Icon: Wolverine by Djief Bergeron

Thanks to Danny Truong for donating this great piece to the auctions! It’s massive – almost 22″ x 34″.

Djief Bergeron worked for many years in the fields of 2D-3D animation and video game design. In those years he designed environments and characters for platforms and online games. In 2005, he joined Grafiksismik Studio as a house artist working full-time on illustrations and comic books (such as The Grimoire for the late Speakeasy Comics), and has continued to freelance in comics to this – producing stories for French Europeen comics magazines. He presently works for the french publishers Soleil (“Le Crépuscule des Dieux”) and Glénat (“Saint-Germain”).

Toronto Cartoonists Workshop March Update

TCW Upcoming Comics News and Events

Part of the mandate of the Toronto Cartoonists Workshop is to keep students informed and involved with comics events and happenings in and around the GTA. Please find below some upcoming items we recommend.

First of all I want to thank everyone who came out to the Guy Davis Exhibit and Workshop at the Gladstone on February 27th or attended the Toronto ComiCON on the 28th where Guy was signing and sketching. Both events were very well attended and we hope to have Guy back for another future event. Exhibit organizer Sean Menard still has original art by Guy available on his website at http://www.artoriginals.ca . A gorgeous letterpress print was produced for the show in an edition of 100 and we recommend you check out the site to take a look.

You may want to mark June 5th and 6th on your calendars as the Toronto ComiCON will be holding their Fan Appreciation Event on those dates and we will be assisting with workshops and programming as well as launching a new exhibition and workshop at the Gladstone for Art Originals. Watch for details at: http://www.hobbystar.com/upcomingevents/index.html
Guests for both events will be announced soon.

I would also like to point out that the 2010 version of the Toronto Comic Art Festival isn’t far off. Our friends at the Beguiling put on an amazing show and you shouldn’t miss it. TCAF takes place on May 8th and 9th at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St.. Admission to the event is FREE! Visiting luminaries attending thus far include Dan Clowes, Jim Woodring and James Sturm. For a full list of guests and event details visit: http://torontocomics.com/

Toronto Cartoonists Workshop instructor Paul Rivoche will be set up at TCAF again this year and will have copies of his sketchbooks and prints for sale. To see more of Paul’s work go to: http://www.rocketfiction.com/ . Paul taught “The Art of Background Design” for us last July and we hope to have him back again sometime in 2010 if his schedule permits.

If art comics are your thing we also recommend the upcoming lecture with Gary Panter. It is part of the Faculty of Design Speaker Series and takes place Thursday March 25, 2010 at 6:30pm in the Ontario College of Art & Design Auditorium. On April 26th autobio comics wunderkind Jeffrey Brown will attend the lecture Graphically Speaking: Jeffrey Brown’s UNDELETED SCENES at the North York Central Library. The NYCL is located at 5120 Yonge St. (at North York TTC). The talk begins at 6:30 and runs to 8:30. It is free to attend and is sponsored by the Beguiling and TCAF.

If animation is your thing we remind you of the Sheldon Cohen Retrospective put on by the Toronto Animated Image Society. It takes place Saturday, March 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the NFB Mediateque at 150 John St. TAIS runs regular workshops and meetups for animators at their headquarters at 60 Atlantic Ave. Check out their website for more info: http://www.tais.ca/

Finally I should mention that Toronto Cartoonists Workshop mainstay instructor Ty Templeton will be attending the upcoming Wizard World Toronto show as a Special Guest. When Ty is not at his table you can find him at the Wizard booth from 1-2 on Friday and 4-5 on Saturday. The Toronto Cartoonists Workshop will not be exhibiting at the WizardWorld Toronto show, but hope if you are attending that you will drop by Ty’s table and say hello. In the meantime for all things Ty Templeton check out his site at: http://tytempletonart.wordpress.com/

If you have an art or comics related event that you think would be of interest please feel free to drop us a line at info@cartoonistsworkshop.com and we will try to include it in our next community newsletter.

Cheers.

Coordinator
Toronto Cartoonists Workshop
