Jeff Lemire to write Superboy ongoing for DC Comics

Jeff Lemire, along with artist Pier Gallo, will be launching a SUPERBOY ongoing series later this year,  debuting the series in a backup feature in August’s ACTION COMICS #892.

“I am really excited to be taking over the adventures of Conner Kent/Superboy in a new monthly series! The book will combine many of the classic touchstones of the Superboy mythos along with new supporting characters, new villains and new ideas, building a strong foundation that can support the Boy of Steel for years to come. I really want to work with our amazing artist Pier Gallo to combine a classic storytelling feel with a thoroughly modern sensibility and explore what it would really be like to be a super powered teenager, in the heart of rural America.”

Pier Gallo will illustrate SUPERBOY for writer Jeff Lemire.

Newsarama later caught up with Lemire to ask him a few questions about the Superboy project.

Not long now — June 5th approaching fast!

Everything is being finalized, tuxes are being rented… well, maybe not tuxes… anyway we are only a few short weeks away from the awards and we have a LOT to do between now and then so you may find that on some days we won’t be posting as much as we usually do.

Today we finalized the ceremony presentation order, now we need to finalize the winners! The five juries (who will be announced shortly, we aren’t giving out their names until the decisions are made) are burning their way through the material before we gather/meet to decide the winners. This year we’ll be lumping the awards into distinct presentation groups interspersed with Hall of Fame presentations.

Five juries you say!

1. Art – Artist, Colourist, Cover Art

2. Story – Webcomics, Writer, Cartoonist

3. Comics for Kids

4. Retailer, Publisher

5. Gene Day Award

At least the Hall of Fame Inductees are all decided! They’ve all been contacted by this point and we’ve received confirmation that almost all of them will be attending (yes, all of our Hall of Fame Inductees in 2010 are still with us) the ceremony on the 5th. Hall of Fame Inductees will be announced as soon as we have our nominees for Gene Day finalized. I’ve set a deadline of March 26th, but we may know sooner than that.

The Kids of Johnny Canuck

Through a link on their site I’ve become aware of a website called The Kids of Johnny Canuck which has some information on the late Leo Bachle aka Les Barker who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in our inaugural year, 2005. Their plea:

Leo Bachle (aka Les Barker), the creator of the Johnny Canuck comics, comedian, and ladies man travelled the world entertaining audiences. His charm seduced women, and now, after his death, his family discovers a legacy of children. Twelve children with eight different women, ranging in age from 44 to 66, have been confirmed as his. Some of the children continue the search for their unknown brothers and sisters.

If you can help them, please email them at kidsofjohnnycanuck@hotmail.com

Brampton, ON’s Stadium Comics declares August 13 “Michael Cera Day”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRAMPTON (ON) – Brampton native Michael Cera has made quite a name for himself in Hollywood, having starred in several popular movies and television shows. It’s his latest movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World that has one local business extending the actor an interesting invitation.

“The Scott Pilgrim movie is based on a popular comic series, so I think Michael Cera should come to his hometown comic shop for a signing on the weekend the movie premieres.” Says Kevin Hickey, manager of Stadium Comics located at Shoppers World Mall in Brampton.

“We are declaring August 13th (the release date of the movie) to be Michael Cera Day here at Stadium. We’ll roll out the red carpet for him. Residents of our city would love to show their appreciation for his work and meet him in person, and we think our store is the perfect place for that to happen!”

Hickey admits that they have not been in touch with anyone from Michael Cera’s camp, nor do the operators of the shop have any idea how to make the scheduled guest appearance a reality. Citing movies such as Wayne’s World 2, along with countless television sitcoms he watched growing up, Hickey believes that if the store just puts on the event, chances are good Cera will show up.

“Basically what watching those films and shows taught me was that if you want a celebrity to make an appearance at an event you are organizing, just tell everyone that they’ll be there, and then the universe will align and make it happen – like with Aerosmith in Wayne’s World 2. It works even better if you are organizing the event just to impress a girl.”

It is unknown at this time if the Brampton-born Cera will be in town on that weekend for the premiere of the movie, in which the city of Toronto serves as the backdrop for the story. The in-demand actor spends much of his time in Hollywood these days. That uncertainty isn’t deterring the management team at Stadium Comics.

“We have a contingency plan in place,” states Rob Sinnott, who is also a manager at Stadium. “Should Michael be too busy to appear at our store, we’ll also accept a guest appearance by one of Brampton’s other celebrities – such as comedians Scott Thompson or Russell Peters, NHLer Rick Nash, or any of the Ashmore twins. We’d just ask that they try to look a little like Michael Cera, or adopt some of his mannerisms for the day.”

As unlikely as the appearance seems, the staff at Stadium Comics are forging ahead with plans for the event. Even if they succeed in attracting Cera to their event, they won’t be able to pay the actor for his time.

“We can’t really afford an appearance fee, but our mall has an excellent food court and we’d be happy to buy Michael lunch. It helps that we are located next to a Cinnabon.”

With or without the guest of honour, Michael Cera Day takes place on August 13th at Stadium Comics in Brampton.

TCAF 2010 – over and out!

Members of the Awards Association spent two enjoyable days at the Toronto Reference Library checking out the now annual Toronto Comic Arts Festival. Associate Director Robert Haines, Publisher Liaison Allison Covey, Associate Member Jason Truong and myself,  plus many members of the Association’s past and present Nominating Committees and Juries were milling about, as well as some of the past and present nominees of the Joe Shuster Awards (including J. Torres, Andy B., Kathryn and Stuart Immonen, Renee Engstrom, Kate Beaton, Karl Kerschl, Cameron Stewart, Kean Soo, Seth, Conundrum Press, Drawn and Quarterly, La Pasteque, The Beguiling).

I had a series of great conversations – with a lot of amazing people about the Awards, comic shows and the state of the comics community / industry in mid-2010. The overwhelming consensus at the event is that it was energizing for those that make comics, was profitable for quite a few of them, and that no one is quite sure where we are going – but that things are a lot better than they were just ten years ago.  While TCAF was not specifically about Canadian comics, Canadian creators definitely made up the majority of people exhibiting – and things are definitely blooming here in the Great White North.

I thought that the 2010 TCAF did a much better job of utilizing the space at the library this year. The main hall was well designed and never felt too jam-packed. There were no areas that didn’t receive proper exposure. The Transmission X room was slightly off to the side and the destination for many. The back room which was too hot last year seemed better filled and better ventilated with it’s focus on publishers like La Pasteque, Koyama, Boom! Kids, New Reliable Press. The newly opened Appel Salon on the second floor was a GREAT space – nice and open. They could have easily placed another island of tables in the centre of that room. The webcomics and zine focus of the upstairs worked very well in my opinion, with huge lines for Kate Beaton and Questionable Content whenever they were at their tables.

Visions of an Icon: Wolverine by Tom Grummett

TOM GRUMMETT, artist, has been a mainstay of the industry since the late 80s, and is best known for his work on such DC Comics titles as Superman (participating in the Death of Superman storyline of the early 1990′s), was the co-creator of the modern Superboy and worked on many other titles such as Robin, the Titans, the Teen Titans (with writer Geoff Johns), and the Power Company (with writer Kurt Busiek). He was also a co-founder of Gorilla Comics. At Marvel Comics Grummett’s action-packed pencils have been seen on titles such as Avengers/Thunderbolts, Generation X, Silver Surfer, X-Men Unlimited, assorted Spider-Man books, the New Thunderbolts, Baron Zemo and the Black Knight. More recently Tom has been working on the title X-Men Forever with writer Chris Claremont.

Visions of an Icon: Wolverine print with sketch by Ken Steacy

KEN STEACY is a Canadian Air Force brat who decided at age eleven to become a professional comic book artist and has gone on to become one of Canada’s leading comic artists with a career spanning over thirty years. He graduated at the Ontario College of Art in the mid-1970s where he studied Photo/Electric Arts and drove all of his profs crazy by turning in comic strips for assignments instead of the film or video requested. They finally figured out what he was up to and awarded him a pile of scholarships, including the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal. He pursued his intent to become a comic creator until the magic moment occurred in 1974 with the publication in ORB Magazine of Super Student, a two page strip that he wrote, penciled, inked, and lettered. This holistic approach has been a hallmark of his work ever since, true to his belief that specialization is for insects, not artists.

He has since contributed to numerous comic books and magazines, such as Epic Illustrated, Marvel Fanfare, Jonny Quest and Iron Man. Steacy also worked a lot for the Star Wars series, making comics, trading cards and children’s books and collaborated with comic writers such as Harlan Ellison on the graphic novels ‘Night and the Enemy’ and Dean Motter on ‘The Sacred and the Profane’ along with numerous collaborations with author Douglas Coupland. Ken Steacy was the writer/artist of the 1990 comic series ‘Tempus Fugitive’, published by DC comics. In the early 1990s, he worked on an interactive CD-ROM for children, called ‘The Awesome Adventures of Victor Vector and Yondo’, and made a comic series starring the same characters and later created ‘Brightwork’, a book celebrating classic car ornamentation. He also produced all of the display artwork for the Space Place gallery at Edmonton’s TELUS World of Science, designed the sets and promotional material for a production of West Side Story, and painted stacks of World of Warcraft, Marvel Masterpieces, and Indiana Jones gaming cards. He was the recipient of a 1990 Inkpot Award and currently runs Ken Steacy Publishing, an on-demand publishing house for comic creators.

With paintings in the permanent collection of the National War Museum in Ottawa and two recent exhibits at art galleries in BC Ken Steacy has had a distinguished and very prolific career in the graphic arts, creating innumerable illustrations and covers for comics and for many productions outside the comic field, and he continues to this day producing his unique and distinctive brand of artistic magic.

Visions of an Icon: Wolverine by Danny Wong

DANIEL WONG joined the McHozers Comics studio shortly after it’s inception in 2007, and has produced several works with the studio, including Celtic Shaman, Grim Origins and others. With 13+ years professional experience in engineering and software development, he also serves as the studio’s webmaster and principle designer.

Visions of an Icon: Wolverine by Michael Cherkas

MICHAEL CHERKAS is one of Canada’s leading comic artists and illustrators. He created the award-winning comic book series ‘The Silent Invasion’ together with writer Larry Hancock in 1985. The comic is a tale of paranoia and alien invasion in the 1950’s, and was reprinted as a graphic novel by NBM in New York in 1988. Cherkas continued to work with Hancock on ‘Suburban Nightmares’. With writer John Sabljic, he created ‘The New Frontier’, a thriller of 1960’s conspiracies.  Mike lives in Toronto with his wife, Elizabeth, and two children, Matthew and John.  When not drawing comics he works as an illustrator and senior designer for a local visual communications company and likes to tend to his tomato garden.  He is currently working on some new comic material with his longtime collaborator, Hancock, and is drawing and co-creating a graphic novel called Third Horseman based in Ukraine during Stalin’s imposed famine and attempted genocide of that nation.

Happenings: Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) May 8-9, 2010

This weekend sees the return of the now annual TORONTO COMIC ARTS FESTIVAL:

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival

Saturday May 8th, 9am-5pm   &    Sunday May 9th, 11am-5pm

@ Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St., Toronto, Canada, 416-533-9168

Admission to TCAF is Free.

Presented by: The Toronto Public Library, The Beguiling, Eye Weekly, Broken Pencil

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival exists to promote the breadth and diversity of comics, and what is considered comics, as legitimate medium of literary and artistic worth. The festival seeks to promote the creators of these works in their broad and diverse voices, for the betterment of the medium of comics and to reach as wide an audience as possible for them.

The first Toronto Comic Arts Festival (“TCAF”) was held on the weekend of March 29th 2003. It was the natural progression of years of disparate book signings, author appearances and miscellaneous events put together by a group of volunteers interested in promoting the literary and artistic merits of comic books and graphic novels.

Attendance and excitement grew during subsequent events, held every two years. TCAF 2005 was held the weekend of May 28-29 in large tents set up on the grounds of Honest Ed’s department store. TCAF 2007 moved back indoors to the Victoria College building on the University of Toronto over the August 18-19 weekend. TCAF 2009 was the biggest TCAF to date, taking place in partnership with Toronto Public Library in their massive flagship location, Toronto Reference Library  on the weekend of May 9th and 10th, engaging over 300 exhibitors consisting of authors, artists, publishers, from 6 different countries including France, Germany, Japan, and England.

While most of shows of this nature are pop-culture events, the organizers wanted to do something that dealt more specifically with the art form of comics itself, with an emphasis on genre appreciation and interaction between creators and their community.

————–

Editor’s note: Yes, the above information is taken directly from the TCAF website, however I’ve edited it slightly to exclude attendance figures and some potshots at other more traditional comics events for the sake of building this one up.

——–

Anyway, hundreds of guests, including some great Canadian guests that have never been here before, including creators from Quebec that rarely make appearances at English festivals — there is a huge focus on webcomics and kids comics. Highly recommended.

More bad news — Sophia Books in Vancouver is closing it’s retail store.

Sophia Books is Vancouver’s multilingual media shop, and among the many things they carried in their diverse inventory were selections of bandes dessinées and manga. The store at 450 Hastings Street West is closing so that the company can focus on supplying books to schools, libraries and subscriptions. The retail store has been a Vancouver landmark since 1975.

Another Vancouver independent bookstore, Sophia Books, B.C.’s (and Canada’s) only multilingual bookstore is closing its Hastings St. branch at the end of May to concentrate on its School, Libraries and magazines subscription division.

Hefty rent increase and the general state of the book industry are the root causes for the closure, having combined to make an untenable environment for the independent bookseller, in a city where independent retailers are slowly disappearing

Founded in 1975 by Makoto Inoue, Sophia Books was Canada’s first Japanese bookstore. Through the 80s and 90s, it became the reference bookstore for Japanese and other Asian-related language books, art books, travel books, pop culture etc

In 1999, Inoue’s fourth daughter, Yuki, and her husband Marc Fournier (then manager of Manhattan Books, the funky multilingual branch of Duthie Books on Robson Street) took over the family business and relocated, fusioned and rebranded Sophia Books. The new Sophia Books opened on Hastings St in 2000 and blossomed into a multi-language and international cultural mecca: books, magazines & newspapers in French, Japanese, German, Spanish, Italian and, of course, English + the country’s best selection of books & magazines on Fashion, Graffiti Art and Tattoo Art. In a growing multicultural city, Sophia Books was its best multicultural ambassador.

Languages; being written, spoken, visual, wearable or musical, have always been the strength of this independent bookstore. Through their wholesale division, they have and will continue to supply multilingual materials to schools and libraries, handle mail orders and offer a unique Japanese magazine subscription service. The management and staff of Sophia Books would like to thank its customers for their support over the 35 years that the store has been in business. 35 years of loyal and cultural exchanges.
