On the closing of Yesterday’s Heroes

Over at Sequential, David Hains writes about the Bloor/Bathurst area and attempts to shed some light on the closing of long-lived area fixture Yesterday’s Heroes.

Aside from YH, Toronto has many long-lived comic shops
- the Silver Snail on Queen arrived in the mid-1970′s – spinning out of the back room of science fiction bookstore Bakka Books – for a brief time it was also the home of Andromeda Distributing – the Silver Snail is Toronto’s oldest surviving comic book shop
- John Biernet’s Dragon Lady Comics (originally east of the Snail on Queen, now on College Street West) debuted in the late 1970′s and is Toronto’s second oldest surviving comic shop
- The Giancoulous brothers’ One Million Comix (on Yonge, south of Wellesley) launched in the late 1980′s, originally as a franchise of Gerry Ross’ Montreal store of the same name, but has long since shed that connection.
- Another late 1980′s arrival, The Beguiling has since gone on to international renown and was this year’s Kremer Award winning retailer
- Survivors of the 1990′s – Excalibur Comics, Paradise Comics, Hairy Tarantula, 3rd Quadrant, Comics’n'More and a few others.

Bloor/Bathurst is an interesting area. While David mentions the area is going down one store with the departure of YH (leaving the Beguiling, the Labyrinth and BMV), my sources tell me that will probably change soon as another player is looking at eventually moving his existing store into the area. I wonder if perhaps that area has too many comic book shops though – it reminds me of the Queen Street West scene when Silver Snail, Dragon Lady and 3rd Quadrant were all within a couple of blocks of one another. One hopes that this isn’t the onset of a comic shop “war”. There was a pricing war a few years back which severely hurt quite a few smaller shops.

I was first made aware of the closing of YH when I heard that the store’s owner was shopping around his back issue inventory to other stores/dealers earlier this year. I will confess I haven’t been to the store, or heard much of anything about YH since my high school years when I used to make the rounds looking for back issues in the 80′.

The closing is purported to be because the store’s owner has decided to give up the weekly drive, not because of specific external financial pressures or changes to the industry. YH’s proximity to University of Toronto, the subway and the younger skewed Annex area all contributed to it’s longevity. It also diversified slightly and carried products that were not also carried or promoted by the other Annex area stores such as toys and cards.

Comic Book Daily: Don’t Support Your Local Comic Book Store?

The Whosoever Holds this Hammer blog at Comic Book Daily discusses the need for comic book retailers to strive to do better in 2010 if they want to continue to serve their community and maintain customer support.

We here at the JSA’s are very pro-comic book retailers and want to support them where we can. While  the columnist’s sentiments that a comic book retailer should be working to keep and encourage community support of their comic book store is correct — that means some work on their part. Of course, it’s only common sense that keeping a store clean, accessible, customer friendly and staffing it with courteous and knowledgeable employee are ways to improve the shopping experience for your customers.

UPDATE (1:15AM Saturday morning):

In retrospect, after reading Robert’s lengthy reply to this brief article link I do see that aggressive and deriding tone to the column, but that kind of approach is often equated with the “wake up call” approach that many columnists adopt when trying to shake things up. I’m certainly not advocating that people stop shopping with comic book retailers, but retailers are providing you with a service and they should be willing to work with customers (within reason) to keep existing business and hopefully attract more customers in the process. Many of the great stores that have been previously nominated for the Kremer Award in the past years have taken an approach that resembles what the columnist is advocating, but I do agree that he could have done it less sensationally. I’m only marginally aware that there is a fellow offering his services as a comic book store adviser, but I did not realize that the columnist was the same individual.

I often wonder how San Diego selects their special guests, but this year there are 47 listed on the website. I was kind of surprised to see only three Canucks made the elite list of official convention guests including:

Kathryn Immonen
Writer, Runaways, Patsy Walker: Hellcat
Kathryn Immonen has written stories for both DC and Marvel, including the sleeper hit miniseries Patsy Walker: Hellcat. She recently completed a run on the fan favorite series Runaways and is currently wrapping the X-Men miniseries Pixie Strikes Back! with Sara Pichelli and this June’s Heralds, with Tonci Zonjic. The creator-owned Moving Pictures, drawn by Stuart Immonen, will be released by Top Shelf in May 2010. The Immonens will soon be moving on to their next project, Russian Olive to Red King. She lives in a Toronto with her very talented husband, her very tall son, and their very bad dog.

Stuart Immonen
Artist, New Avengers, Ultimate Spider-Man, Moving Pictures
Over a span of more than 20 years, Stuart Immonen has worked for virtually every comics publisher (extant and extinct) and is best known for such diverse and critically acclaimed work as Nextwave and Superman: Secret Identity. After a successful run on Ultimate Spider-Man, Stuart is currently the top-selling artist on Marvel’s New Avengers. The creator-owned Never as Bad as You Think (written by Kathryn Immonen) has recently been given the hardcover treatment by BOOM! Studios and Moving Pictures will be released by Top Shelf in May 2010 to debut at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. He lives in Toronto with the good, the bad and the rather tall.

Jillian Tamaki
Artist, Skim, indoor Voice
Jillian Tamaki is the artist behind the New York Times Best Illustrated Book Skim, which was also nominated for a Canadian Governor General’s Literary Award and two Eisner Awards and won a Doug Wright Award and an Ignatz Award. She is a sought-after illustrator for such companies as the New York Times and The New Yorker and has been recognized by Communication Arts Illustrated, the Society of Illustrators, and the Society of Publication Designers. This spring she is publishing a collection of sketches and comics for Drawn & Quarterly, titled Indoor Voice. She is also the artist behind Gilded Lilies.

Of course, this isn’t it — many guests book their own tables and booths, or appear at their publisher’s booth(s) for special signings.

Canadian Comic Book Awards Association invades America

Yes, it’s almost time for SAN DIEGO COMIC CON INTERNATIONAL 2010 (July 21-25) and Canadian comic book creators and publishers, and some retailers, are gearing up for the annual trek to sunny San Diego.

It’s no exception for those of us here who work at the CCBCAA. Many of us are going to San Diego this year, including Allison Covey, Tyrone Biljan and myself. We’ll be there walking around and checking things out and connecting with our fellow Canucks and getting the news on what’s being planned for the rest of 2010 and beyond.

Also, Jennifer Stewart, owner of Guelph ON store The Dragon and sponsor of the COMICS FOR KIDS Joe Shuster Award is also attending,  as The Dragon is in the running for the Will Eisner Spirit of Retailing Award – finalists will be announced on Friday, July 23rd – the morning of the Will Eisner Comic Book Industry Awards.

Check the site for post on Canadians at SDCCI – the Special Guests, the Artist Alley, the exhibitor and guest lists.

Jeff Lemire goes DC Exclusive

Care of The Source:

We’re also very proud to announce that Jeff Lemire has signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics, meaning only good things for fans of his mind-bending work on Vertigo’s SWEET TOOTH and his upcoming work on the ATOM co-feature in ADVENTURE COMICS and the ongoing SUPERBOY series. We got a minute of Jeff’s time to get his thoughts on his new exclusive and DC work, so take it away, Jeff:

“As a life long DC Comics fan, I am incredibly excited to be a part of both the DCU and of Vertigo moving forward. Sweet Tooth has been a labor of love for me and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of Karen Berger and everyone at Vertigo. So, the opportunity to not only continue Gus and Jepperd’s saga, but also take on the new Superboy monthly and the adventures of Ray Palmer, The Atom is a dream come true for me!

Both the DC and Vertigo line ups at the moment are full of amazing creators and amazing characters and I’m thrilled to have the chance to be a part of that in the years to come!”

So, good news all around

Conundrum Press – How can a Retailer order these books?

Thanks to a slew of interesting new releases recently, such as:

The Hipless Boy by Sully

Children of the Atom by Dave Lapp

Ruts & Gullies: Nine Days in Saint Petersburg by Philippe Girard

and the very underrated The Undertaking by Michael J. Hind

I’ve been asked by a number of Canadian retailers, ‘How do I order comics from Conundrum Press?’.

I’ve personally looked through the Diamond reorder system and there are only a few book available. So to get to the bottom of this question, I contacted Andy Brown, the publisher of Conundrum Press.

The straight answer:

After Diamond Distributing enacted the new minimum order requirements, Diamond no longer carries all Conundrum Press titles. The Hipless Boy was dropped by Diamond after solicitation, without informing the publisher. But that doesn’t mean that Conundrum won’t continue with Diamond, the forthcoming title Inkstuds, a collection of interviews with comic creators conducted by BC’s Robin McConnell which will be in the August Previews.

But fear not, there are many other ways to order Conundrum Press books!

The Canadian-based Distributor for all Conundrum Press books, including comics and graphic novels, is Litdistco.

Litdistco
phone: 1-800-591-6250 (toll free Canada, U.S.)
fax: 1-800-591-6251 (Toll Free Canada, U.S.)
orders@litdistco.ca

They also use the Ingram Book Company for US orders. So orders can go through Ingram without a problem.

In the US, Conundrum uses great guy, and mini-comics promoter/guru Tony Shenton. Tony has a very cool job as comic sales rep. To order through Tony you can call 718-923-1136 for his home office, or email shenton4sales@aol.com.

Note: Tony Shenton represents many, many American mini-comix/zine/self pub creators which may be of interest to retailers.

Perhaps the easiest option, retailers can order directly from Conundrum Press. Just email Andy and he can hook you up, at discount levels similar to Diamond.

Francis Manapul jumps to television with Beast Legends

Debuting this week on History Television (check with your local cable provider for specific dates and times is Francis Manapul’s latest project — part of the Beast Seekers team of investigators for the new show BEAST LEGENDS.

Robert Pincombe covers the story on Comic Canuck

Beast Legends investigates and creates incredible creatures: Unidentified Mysterious Animals… animals unknown to science.

In the same way that paleontology speculates about what dinosaurs were really like, our experts now do the same for creatures of legend.

Each show begins with an iconic legend and delivers an incredible result. We are not trying to track down and find these creatures. Instead we intend to determine what these Beasts would be if they could exist or what they might have been if they did.

Leading zoologists, working with specialist scientists, tease clues from eyewitness accounts and physical evidence to arrive at grounded and groundbreaking conclusions.

Life is breathed into each Beast through high-end 3D CGI. As each show progresses, the creature of that hour evolves and is seamlessly incorporated into its natural environment… our ‘prey’ becomes the predator tracking the investigators as they gather more clues to its existence…

And finally our Beasts are released into the modern world to rampage across the screen in phenomenal photo-real animation.
