Moving Day Announcement: DC and Marvel make changes

So they aren’t Canadian companies, but a lot of our creators are employed by them. Today is an interesting day as both companies have announced office changes and DC has decided to end two of their publishing lines to amalgamate them under the DC banner.

Marvel’s news was an office change – they are moving to 135 West 50th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues. Some speculators suggested Disney might move everyone down to Orlando, but that isn’t happening anytime soon as they’ve signed a 9-year lease on the new space.

DC was expected to announce a move from New York to Los Angeles, but have decided instead to keep the comics editorial division in New York, moving instead the multi-media and digital content production management to Burbank, California.

The bigger news of the day was that DC has decided to put to bed the WildStorm and Zuda lines.

WildStorm has been limping along since DC acquired Jim Lee and his company over 10 years ago. Anything WildStorm – licenses and such – are now part of DC Entertainment’s main comic book publishing lines and if they come back they’ll be under the main DC brand. That really affects only things like WildCATs, Stormwatch, Gen13 and they claim to have plans but want to give those characters a rest. Planetary and Ex Machina have ended, and if DC decides to do a second mini of Mysterius the Unfathomable (hopefully they will as the first one was excellent – kudos to Tom Fowler) it will be under the DC imprint. The other announcement was the end of Zuda – which I thought they had already announced had ended. What this means for Andy Belanger’s Bottle of Awesome I don’t quite know — the press release indicates that any Zuda stuff will fall under the digital content side of DC out of the Burbank office. Andy mentioned the other day that his third season had been cut and he had to fold his ideas for season 3 into season 2…let’s hope he’s able to salvage it.

Cerebus could return? (plus the Sim event at Strange Adventures)

Information about the Last Dave Sim signing at Strange Adventures is being released. Of note, Dave conducted an exclusive interview with The Coast and revealed the following:

(T)he question of whether his beloved creation Cerebus will ever make a return will certainly come up. He does, in fact, have plans.

“The only way I would revisit the character—and here’s a Coast exclusive for you—is if I was to do a miniseries or graphic novel, Cerebus: The Afterlife, which I have a few mental notes floating around in my head about. I might have to wait a few years. People were squeamish enough about seeing Cerebus in his old age, not wanting to think about getting—or being—old. Speculations on an afterlife would really push some hot buttons, I think.”

I guess the question would be: is there an appetite for the material? How many people read the series from start to finish because they loved it? I’ll admit that I have the complete Cerebus series, all 16 phonebooks, and I’ve read most of the series. I stopped reading part way through issue 279, putting it away because I lost interest in the dense religious material and the Cerebus/Woody Allen meandering; though I did read 299 and 300. I’ve contemplated starting the series again, at #1, but there are so many comics I haven’t read already, I should probably read those first.

Happenings: Skull Kickers #1 Release Week Signings and Events

Okay, I swear this is the last SK post today!

Alluded to in an early post by Robert Haines, Jim Zubkavich has a busy day ahead of himself this Wednesday with the release of the first issue of his new Skull Kickers comic series:

- Paradise Comics reports that they are honoured to be hosting an afternoon signing with Jim at their store between 3:30 and 6:30 pm. Paradise is located at 3278 Yonge Street in uptown Toronto (near Yonge and Lawrence).

- The Beguiling is then hosting a special Skull Kickers 1 release party at the Central (603 Markham Street – right next to the Beguiling). The party starts at 7pm and goes to about 9pm. Jim will be giving a short presentation on the creation of the series at the event.

Also, in New York City, Skull Kickers artist  Edwin Huang will be appearing at Midtown Comics (200 W. 40th Street) from 7:30-8:30pm on Friday, September 24th to promote the release of the first issue.

Finally, the creative team will unite for signings at the Image Comics booth at the New York Comic Con on October 8-10, 2010!

Skull Kickers #1 out on Wednesday – 1st print sold out at Diamond – 2nd print coming!

Writer Jim Zubkavich explains how this happened on the Skull Kickers website:

Anyways, it may sound a bit weird announcing that Skullkickers #1 first printing has ‘sold out at the distribution level before release‘. What does that mean and how does that happen? Can people still buy copies on September 22nd?

Okay, here’s how it goes:

Comics are solicited 3 months in advance of their actual release (book stores order way earlier than that. 6-9 months usually). This means comic retailers who have accounts with Diamond Distribution receive a catalogue of upcoming titles and can place an order for the number of copies they’d like to stock.

Unlike book stores, comic book retailers purchase these comics outright from Diamond, so there are no returns (except in rare cases). This helps stabilize income for smaller comic publishers (they won’t get hit with returns and restocking fees later on so the money they get is what they’ve earned) but it also means most retailers are afraid to try new titles if they’re unsure it will sell because they’d be stuck with them. There isn’t a lot of incentive to take risks on new things, especially from untested/unknown talent. They’re safer off seeing what gets popular and jumping on later rather than trailblazing.

Skullkickers is an unknown quantity and retailers responded with the expected pretty-good-but-not-great orders when we hit the Final Order Cut-Off deadline. That’s the date when retailers can change their numbers and print runs are set by publishers. Talking to the reps at Image, they felt the book had been under ordered and it was possible we could move quite a few more with reorders after issue #1 came out and good of word of mouth grew for the series. We put together a generous overprint (to cover any copies damaged in shipping and to absorb those hopeful reorders) and then crossed our fingers reorders would be strong.

Right after that cut off date, Skullkickers received some great coverage on several comic sites (notably, Bleeding Cool‘s positive assessment) and more advance reviews popped up with very positive feedback. Retailers responded with reorder requests and, when more positive coverage hit, those late orders grew again. Eric Stephenson at Image asked us to prep a possible 2nd printing cover in case we had to go back to press on the issue right after launch in order to fulfil those late orders.

Well, something awesome seems to be rolling because those extra orders have now roared past our overprint number and Image is going back to print on the book even before it comes out in order to meet retailer demand. It’s pretty much the best case scenario for a new indy series trying to get extra interest with potential readers and it puts us in a good spot at the upcoming New York Comicon in early October.

So, in short, (this) week you can buy copies of Skullkickers #1 first printing. Grab them while they last. If your local comic shop ordered copies then they’ll be there. If they didn’t order any (and that is the case with many stores), they can now get 2nd printing issue 1′s on October 13th, one week before issue #2 hits store shelves.

We’re not out of the woods yet. This is still the comics business and an unknown title. I assure you, there are no dump trucks of money to be had on something like this. Even with possible reprint sales we’ll be doing our best to just carve out something sustainable. If the buzz can carry over to a stable readership from issue #2 onwards that would be fantastic. I’m ecstatic and doing my best to stay level-headed while simultaneously feeling amazing about the book’s potential. I don’t want empty hype or to build expectations too high on it, I just want people to jump on board a new comic series and have as much fun reading it as we’ve had putting it together.

Happenings: WOWEE ZONK 3 & BABA YAGA AND THE WOLF – DOUBLE BOOK LAUNCH Oct.7th!

As seen on Facebook

Koyama Press and The Beguiling present Wowee Zonk’s “Wowee Zonk 3” and Tin Can Forest’s “Baba Yaga and the Wolf” BOOK LAUNCH Thursday OCT 7th 7pm-10pm
The Central 603 Markham St. Toronto

The Beguiling are teaming up witht he fine folks at Koyama Press to hold a double-book launch for two of their fantastic fall releases!

WOWEE ZONK 3 is the third great comics and art anthology from Toronto’s Wowee Zonk collective. It features new comics from WZ mainstays Chris Kuzma, Ginette Lapalme, and Patrick Kyle, as well as an awesome array of their friends including Zach Worton, Jan Avendano, Chris Simonen, Dan Rocca, Andrei Georgescu, Michael DeForge, and Selena Wong! Another amazing volume of the awesome comics series!

Joining the Wowee Zonk crew will be the esteemed TIN CAN FOREST, better known as Pat Shewchuk and Marek Colek. In their new graphic novella Baba Yaga and the Wolf, Marek Colek and Pat Shewchuk, drawing inspiration from early Russian animated films, Slavic mythology, and symbols and pictography associated with the many iterations of the Baba Yaga mythos, have given new breath to an age-old cautionary tale of being careful to voice that which one most desires in a world where every leaf on every branch on every tree might be aware of such wants and the darkness that exists at their roots.

In addition to signings and presentations at the launch, the combined crew is hoping to put together an installation of art and materials that went into the creation of these books… we’ll confirm that a little later though.

So come on out and enjoy! It’s gonna be an awesome evening filled with good times.

Presented by The Beguiling and Koyama Press, with special thanks to The Central.
