The C4 claims to be Canada’s second largest convention of its genre after Fan Expo Canada in August. This show began to grow in 1994 as the Manitoba Collector’s Expo. As times changed, so did the event, and in 2000 it became the Manitoba Toy & Comic Expo, dropping the antiques and reducing the sportscards. In 2006, the show became known as the Manitoba Comic Con.  In 2008 it moved to the Winnipeg Convention Centre and in 2009 the event was renamed the Central Canada Comic-Con.

The winner gets bragging rights and a Broken Pencil Prize pack worth $200! (This contest is open to all, but space is limited and participants should register in advance to avoid disappointment: to do so email canzine@brokenpencil.com with 1-2 Punch in the subject line. 6-6:30pm VJ/DJ Sammy Chien

Watch as emerging creator Chien merges cinema, sound art, new media and dance into stunning performance pieces.

Home, sweet home.

This past weekend was the fifth New York Comic Con. I’ve attended this event every year since the first one back in 2006. Needless to say it was quite possibly one of the biggest shows of the calendar year and there were a lot of people there. Not quite sure how many, but everyone was speculating on numbers at the show, when we were out for dinner, having coffee, etc. It was very crowded and there were some problems with bottle-necking.

It was otherwise a fun event and everyone had a good time it seems, other than our common complaints about our sore knees, ankles and feet.

I touched base with a lot of Canadian creators, just seeing how people were doing and by all accounts it seems like the NYCC was a good show for most creators.

Marvel and DC both announced lower cover prices. We announced the DC news before I left on Thursday, but Marvel followed suit later that day.

I’ve been letting some creators know about our 2011 ceremony location plans. Reaction continues to be very positive.

Aside from that, I picked up some comics and books (Skull Kickers 1, Scott Pilgrim 5 & 6, the limited edition of The Outfit – alas, the cover was not shipped up but will be mailed to me later, the limited edition Icon: The Art of Jim Lee hardcover, the Art of Drew Struzan hardcover), some t-shirts for my best gal, some more Toon Tumblers for my kitchen, and got some items signed (the aforementioned limited Outfit along with the regular edition, the Jerry Robinson biography, the Art of Gene Colan, a few more signatures in the Stan Lee Meets… hardcover). No art this time other than getting a commission from Paolo Rivera that wasn’t done in time at Fan Expo back in August.

There were plenty of deals at the show, and lots of books. Hard to tell if people were spending as much as they have in the past, but I suspect sales were spread fairly thin across the hall. There was simply too much of everything at this show.

Comic Retailers – Metropolis Comics & Toys (Burnaby, BC)

Metropolis recently moved into a new location, across the street. This is an interesting mash up shop which caters to the interests of those growing up in the 80′s.

Look up, there it is on the second floor, the all new Metropolis.

News from NYCC 2010

While Kevin, Robert, Allison, and Jenn are at New York Comic Con, I’m sitting here, catching up on the news coming out of there. I figured I might as well link up some of the news, featuring Canadian Creators, with upcoming projects, previews, etc.

- DC has released advance previews of “Batman Inc. #1″ with artwork by Yanick Paquette, and “Batman: The Dark Knight #1″ written and artwork by David Finch (Comic Book Resources)

- Bernard Chang takes over art duties for “Supergirl”, starting with issue #60, in January 2011 (Robot 6 @ CBR)

- Kathryn Immonen will be writing the “Wolverine & Jubilee: Curse of the Mutants” mini-series (CBR)

- MODOK will be in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (Robot 6 @ CBR) – Okay… this doesn’t have anything to do with Canadian Creators… but I found it amusing. MODOK in Marvel vs. Capcom 3!!!

I’ll update this post, as the weekend goes on, provided that there’s news regarding Canadian Creators.

Tangles: A story about Alzheimer’s, My Mother, and Me

Tangles: A story about Alzheimer’s, my mother, and me
by Sarah Leavitt

What do you do when your outspoken, passionate, and quick-witted mother starts fading into a forgetful, fearful woman? In this powerful graphic memoir, Sarah Leavitt reveals how Alzheimer’s disease transformed her mother Midge—and her family—forever.

In spare black and white drawings and clear, candid prose, Sarah shares her family’s journey through a harrowing range of emotions—shock, denial, hope, anger, frustration—all the while learning to cope, and managing to find moments of happiness. Midge, a Harvard-educated intellectual, struggles to comprehend the simplest words; Sarah’s father Rob slowly adapts to his new role as full-time caretaker, but still finds time for word-play and poetry with his wife; Sarah and her sister Hannah argue, laugh, and grieve together as they join forces to help Midge get to sleep, rage about family friends who have disappeared, or collapse in tears at the end of a heartbreaking day.

Tangles confronts the complexity of Alzheimer’s disease, and gradually opens a knot of moments, memories, and dreams to reveal a bond between a mother and a daughter that will never come apart.

Sarah Leavitt writes both prose and comics. Her writing has appeared in Geist, The Globe and Mail, Vancouver Review, The Georgia Straight, and Xtra West. Leavitt has written short documentaries for Definitely Not the Opera on CBC Radio, and her non-fiction has appeared in a number of anthologies, including Nobody’s Mother (Heritage 2006) and Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer’s Disease (Kent State University Press 2009). She has an MFA in Creative Writing from UBC. Tangles is her first book.

PRAISE FOR TANGLES
“Sarah Leavitt uses the medium of comics to tell her story with more economy and power than either words or pictures could muster by themselves. She brings a good eye for the telling detail—the small observations that reveal larger truths—to her memoir of a family in crisis. Tangles is the work of a perceptive, creative, and honest storyteller.”
—Brian Fies, author of Mom’s Cancer

“Brimming with humility and insight, Leavitt proves herself a skilled and unflinching memoirist. Her spare, evocative illustrations and the tender restraint of her prose will leave you breathless, heartbroken and profoundly grateful.”
—Nancy Lee, author of Dead Girls

“An extraordinarily moving and vivid account, in text and cartoon-style pictures, of the life and death of an Alzheimer’s patient.”
—John Bayley, author of Elegy for Iris

Stan Lee teams up with the National Hockey League

NHL, Spider-Man creator Stan Lee join on new superheroes project.

Okay, so Stan’s not Canadian, and I’m not sure the NHL is really Canadian either, but we Canadians sure love hockey (even though Lacrosse is our national sport) and there are many Canadian teams in the NHL (and a whole lot of Canadian players) so I thought I’d let you know about this. Plans are for an initial presentation tomorrow afternoon at the New York Comic Con where some more information will be released to the public.

What I find interesting about the project is that not only is it a means to get kids interested in hockey by using these Guardian superhero characters, but it might actually have just as beneficial (or more) of an effect on comic books, or at least superheroes… when the Leafs sell more tickets at a single game than I imagine that there are regular comics fans in the province of Ontario I can’t help but feel this type of exposure might convince a few people (of all ages) to take a look at some comics.

DC Comics to lower prices in 2011

DC looks to counter faltering sales on periodicals by lowering prices. Good call! Illustration by Darwyn Cooke done for a friend of mine in Montreal fall 2009.

For immediate release:

Beginning January 2011, DC Comics will implement a line-wide pricing adjustment, lowering the prices of all standard length 32-page ongoing comic book titles currently priced at $3.99 to $2.99, it was announced today by DC Comics Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio.

“Today’s announcement re-affirms DC Comics’ commitment to both our core fans and to comic book store retailers,” said Jim Lee, DC Comics Co-Publisher. “For the long term health of the industry, we are willing to take a financial risk so that readers who love our medium do not abandon the art form.”

“As Co-Publishers, we listened to our fans and to our partners in the retail community who told us that a $3.99 price point for 32 pages was too expensive. Fans were becoming increasingly reluctant to sample new titles and long term fans were beginning to abandon titles and characters that they’d collected for years.” said Dan DiDio, DC Comics Co-Publisher. “We needed a progressive pricing strategy that supports our existing business model and, more importantly, allows this creative industry to thrive for years to come. With the exceptions of oversized comic books, like annuals and specials, we are committed to a $2.99 price point.”

When taking into account mini-series, annuals and specials, more than 80% of DC’s comic books will be priced at $2.99.

As of January, the following titles standard length ongoing titles, previously priced at $3.99 for 32 pages/22 story pages, will be priced at $2.99 with 32 pages/20 story pages:

American Vampire;
Batman: The Dark Knight;
Batman Incorporated;
Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors;
JSA All-Stars.

As of January, the following licensed titles, previously priced at $3.99, will be priced at $2.99:

Gears of War;
God of War
Kane & Lynch;
Ratchet & Clank.

As of January, the following ongoing titles previously priced at $3.99 for 40 pages/30 story pages including co-features, will no longer include co-features and will be priced at $2.99 for 32 pages/ 20 story pages:

Action Comics;
Adventure Comics;
Batman: Streets of Gotham;
Detective Comics;
Doc Savage;
Justice League of America;
Legion of Super-Heroes;
The Spirit.

In January, five books are $3.99 for 40 pages/30 story pages:

Batman: Europa # 1
First Wave # 6
DCU: Legacies # 9
Weird Worlds # 1
World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen

The following oversized anniversary issue will be $4.99 for 48 pages/38 story pages:

Hellblazer # 275

“Fans of our co-features should stay tuned. Some of these characters will find a new platform,” said Dan DiDio. “Going forward, mini-series and special events may feature a different price point and page count to best allow writers and artists the flexibility of format and story pages they need to tell their stories best.”
