Gene Day Award for work produced in 2010

Gene Day

The five finalists for the Gene Day Award for Self-Publishing have been selected and will be announced alongside the rest of the Joe Shuster Award finalists.

This was a very strong year for work produced and I would like to profile some of these creators in the coming months.

In the meantime, the complete list of Gene Day submissions (alphabetically by title):

NomCom Selections (Note: this is NOT the final nominees list)

THE LIST OF 2011 NOMINEE FINALISTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED FEBRUARY 1, 2011.

Our Nominating Committees have been working since the fall, looking over the LONG lists of eligible creators and their comics that came out in 2010. Earlier in January, we received their selections for the categories of Artist, Cartoonist, Colourist, Cover Artist and Writer. You’ll find below the full list of creators nominated in each category – ultimately seven creators in each category were selected to make the final ballot (which will be released to the public in early February). Webcomics was selected by a different group, but their list of overall nominees is also included here.

Please note: it’s the unfortunate nature of competitions such as these awards that we must narrow down the selection field for the jury to a handful of creators. Not being selected for the final ballot does not by definition mean the creator’s work was not good or worthy. It is clear that members of the nomcom felt that all of the following creators produced Outstanding comics in 2010, however, only the creators selected by process-driven consensus advanced to the ballot.

The Participants - these individuals were selected based on their access to, and awareness of, comics published in 2010 and the Canadian comics scene.

Henry Cavill is Superman

The one guy on CBC's The Tudors that Henry VIII didn't have killed has been cast as Superman/Clark Kent.

He starred in the Irish/Canadian television show the Tudors, and now British actor Henry Cavill will star as Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s famous co-creation Superman/Clark Kent in the upcoming movie to be directed by Zack Snyder (that will probably be shot in Vancouver, British Columbia).

While I’m a little disappointed that they didn’t just graduate Tom Welling over from Smallville (which is also shot in BC and ends in a few months with Welling’s Clark Kent becoming Superman anyways), I think Cavill is a great choice and will do a fine job as the Man of Steel.

Canada Reads: Essex County week * Updated 1/28

As you may or may not know, Jeff Lemire’s Essex County Trilogy is one of the five featured books in the Canada Reads battle to the death debate over which book is the best new Canadian work of the last decade, and ECT is the only graphic novel in the running. The winner will be selected in a couple of weeks.

Since Essex County is the book featured this week, there’s a lot of stuff going on:

- UPDATED! Podcast: Sara Quin defends Essex County
- NEW! Meet indie artist Sara Quin
- The Beguiling bookstore gives us the inside scoop on Essex County
- Live chat with author Jeff Lemire (today, Jan. 27 at 2pm)
- Jeff Lemire, Chris Oliveros, Matt Forsythe, & Sully in Montreal at the D+Q store (Jan 27 at 7pm in Montreal)
- Brian Francis visits Essex County
- Jeff Lemire gives us a tour of Essex County
- CBC Books – Canada Reads 2011 – Defending Essex County (Sara Quinn and Andrea Chiu

Expect to hear more about this and Jeff over the next couple of days, and I think it would be a fair guess to assume that you will see his name at least once in next week’s Joe Shuster Award Nominations.

I remember when we sat down with the JSA jury in the spring of 2008 to discuss the nominees for the category of Best Cartoonist, and I was overwhelmed by the love that the jury had for the first two volumes of the Trilogy – Tales from the Farm, and most particularly the second chapter – Ghost Stories. It is rare to see people discuss comics and graphic novels using the terms transcendent, heartfelt and highly emotional, especially in a situation as clinical as an awards jury discussion, but everyone who had read the books that year was clearly MOVED by Jeff’s stories. While other cartoonists were being identified as being more technically proficient that year, there was no one who embodied the term cartoonist more in spirit, passion and in practice than Jeff Lemire with those two chapters of this massive work, and he deserved (and received) the award.

Bravo Jeff! This is all well-deserved as Essex County is a tremendous work, and we hope you win the Canada Reads competition.

Clement Sauvé (1977-2011)

Clement Sauvé, Rest in Peace

We regret to inform the community that Montreal artist Clement Sauvé passed away last evening after a heroic battle with cancer. He was only 33.

Sauvé began his comics career as Yanick Paquette’s assistant, but has subsequently worked for DC on projects such as JLA Secret Files, Stormwatch and the Human Defense Corps. He also worked on the series Voltron, GI Joe/Transformers and Infantry for Devil’s Due Publishing. He had also redesigned many characters for the G.I. Joe Renegades project.

On behalf of everyone here at the JSA, our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.

Update 2:15 PM Ty Templeton’s Tribute – Ty and Clement worked together on the Human Defense Corps for DC Comics.

At the San Diego Comic-Con.

UPDATE 11AM: In my day job I work as a cancer researcher, and I am always taken by surprise whenever someone like Clement is stricken with the disease at such a young age, although cancer is a tragedy at ANY age. I strongly urge people to consider making a donation in Clement’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society (or your country, state or local equivalent if you are not Canadian). http://www.cancer.ca/

This beautiful illustration is one of the last pieces Clement posted to his Deviant art blog.

If you would like to leave some words and thoughts about Clement, we would be honoured to know how Clement the person, or his work, impacted your life. Comments welcome.

Alpha Flight returns!

The recent Marvel mini-event “Chaos War” has come to a conclusion and it seems that it was a good one for Alpha Flight “Classic” fans. The Chaos War: Alpha Flight one shot revived Canadian superheroes GUARDIAN, VINDICATOR, SHAMAN and MARRINA. They returned to join NORTHSTAR, AURORA, SASQUATCH & SNOWBIRD.

Unfortunately, at the end of the Chaos War #5 all of the formerly deceased heroes that showed up went back to their eternal reward with some exceptions: Greek demi-god and Avenger Hercules and the aforementioned Alpha Flight members.

Is it just me or is Sasquatch in need of some manscaping in this panel? From Chaos War #5

This sets the stage for an Alpha Flight revival using the classic characters created by John Byrne in the pages of the Uncanny X-Men and their own long-running series (also by Byrne, at least until issue #28).

My sources tell me that some AF news from Marvel is imminent, and rumour has it that a high profile Canadian artist is involved.

Meanwhile, diminutive hero and still dead AF member Puck is appearing in Wolverine in the “Wolverine goes to Hell” storyline.

The limited edition Alpha Flight variant cover for Avengers #4 asked a valid question that seems to have been answered with the return of most of these characters. What's next?

Joe Shuster Awards update 1/26

We’re a little under a week from the big announcement and here’s where we stand:

ARTIST, CARTOONIST, COLOURIST, COVER ARTIST, WRITER – Nominees Selected

PUBLISHER – Nominees Selected

HARRY KREMER RETAILER – 10 finalist stores selected

GENE DAY SELF-PUBLISHER - in process, deadline for books to be received is Friday, Jan 28th

WEBCOMICS – Nominees Selected

HALL OF FAME – 2011 Inductees selected

COMICS 4 KIDS - Books Selected

Sadly, it looks like our plans for a unique GRAPHIC NOVEL award are not going to bear fruit. Logistics, selection issues and budget concerns are going to put this idea back on the shelf.

Dousing the flame…

The Human Torch by Stuart Immonen from an issue of Ultimate Fantastic Four

It’s already been spoiled everywhere, so let’s raise a glass of water to the Fantastic Four’s Human Torch, whose flame was doused by Marvel in Fantastic Four #587, out this week. Killing characters is nothing new to superhero comics, and it’s a tradition most often used to trump up sales, and in this case it’s on a pretty well-written (by Jonathan Hickman) book. Odds are the “dead” character will return in little over a year when the new FF title reverts back to Fantastic Four for it’s 600th issue. I bet Dr. Doom will have something to do with it.

US Comics Industry happenings…

So Wizard magazine is being cancelled, and the magazine’s staff has been fired. Not too shocking (the cancellation), it seemed lacking when they changed to a slightly larger format and the publishers slowly abandoned it. It must be tough coming up with Top 10 lists every month. People have been predicting this for a couple of years now…. too bad about the people being fired and not shifted to the also announced digital pop culture mag “Wizard World”.

Update (by Robert): In a turn of events I did not see coming, Wizard World is going to be a publicly traded company. I don’t know anything about ‘pink sheets’, but based on the comments section I think that’s just about right for Wizard. I wonder if the guys working the Wizard cons will get paid in stock?

Update (by Kevin): To be honest, I pretty much ignored that press release because it was a deflection of the major news of the day, the cancellation of the magazine. The press release doesn’t even mention it. Newsarama had to actually chase down a Wizard rep to get the confirmation statement that not only Wizard but also Toyfare magazine were cancelled.

DC and Archie dropped the comics code. Must not have been many people working at the code – one guy could read all of the Archie and DC releases coming out in a month. Now some poor schlub is out of a job. Wouldn’t that have been a great job? Free comics months before everyone else gets to read them, and you could screw with them if you didn’t like them. Awesome. I feel for that jobless guy. An afterthought decision at this point though, as the code was about as relevant as Leave it to Beaver. If the code wanted to be relevant they could have taken the initiative and adopted a more stylish symbol to make people aware they still existed, like the video game industry did.

Update (by Kevin): Here I am lamenting the loss of employment for one guy, and it turns out there may not have actually been anyone at the wheel of the comics code. Newsarama learned from Archie that they had stopped submitting books over a year ago, but continued to use the seal. Was this also the case with DC? Was it just a rubber stamp?

DC Comics by Canadians – April 2011

All things considered, April seems like a quiet month. Action Comics reaches it’s 900th issue, Flashpoint kicks off in May, Fiona Staples’ issue of Jonah Hex comes out and for some reason Infinity, Inc. is getting the hardcover treatment.

Retailer Roundup – January 2011

Nova Scotia

It’s seems the Strangemobile went kaput earlier this month, the engine blew up. Calum tells us times are tough, he was ripped off for 3k by a contractor in 2010, and that he’s cutting costs rather than laying off staff. Pure speculation, but with the economy in Canada still not up and running (recent reports say that bounceback-wise we are in 6th place of the G7), a third store expansion to Dartmouth last year has resulted in a rise of fix costs such as rent, heat and hydro and staffing costs (salary, WSIB, CPP, EI & tax) have had an impact on the business. The good news is: the Bug is back.

PEI

The Comic Hunter is blogging like crazy in 2011, giving lots of opinions and reviews of comic series. Including telling us that about how much they hate Grant Morrison.

New Brunswick

New comic shop Enigma Comics and Games are must be doing okay, as they are now open Sunday.

Quebec

Publisher D+Q had some of the creators they publish appear. Lynda Barry was in town and gave a talk at the Ukrainian Federation. Dave Cooper went to the shop itself. Next week Jeff Lemire will appear and he will be interviewed by the CBC and discuss Essex County, published by TopShelf.

Ontario

Comic Connection in Hamilton is celebrating 25 years in business.

The Gauntlet in Orangeville are reducing their hours, closing on Mondays but open the other 6 days a week.

The comic market in Ottawa in flux? The Comic Cave is not a full service shop, but instead a model and gaming store that stocked comics. Yet things are so bad in their comics division that they are only selling pre-orders. Nothing to be stocked. That is a very defensive maneuver, but there has been a lot of speculation that comic shops will be under serious economic pressure through Q1 and Q2, 2011.

The Dragon hosted a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Birthday Party to coincide with the release of Buffy Season #40 (the final issue) and Buffy Summers B-Day, natch. Vampire bite butter cookies!

Paradise Comics will be hosting Danielle Corsetto on Jan 19th and Shane Kirshenblatt on Jan 22nd.

Scott Thompson showed up at The Beguiling, signing his new comic The Hollow Planet.

Alberta

Comic-Kazi has begun pre-selling celebrity photo ops for the upcoming Calgary Comic Expo.

A new shop opened in Edmonton, aptly named The Comic Shop. Most interesting about this store: they sell only back issues. Back issue comics have been virtually abandoned in Ontario shops because the $ per sq/ft they provide is too low. The labour involved in gathering, bagging/boarding, pricing and replenishing back-issue comics, the staple of comic shops for 30 years, doesn’t justify their presence in modern business environment. It’s a great way to make your shop look like it is full of product though (or tired and out of date…). Anyway, I find this most interesting. I suppose a similar shop could open up in Toronto and do really well… but for the fact that there is a comic convention every other week here, and the retailers climb over each other to sell you back issues for nearly nothing, would likely mean that bin divers have a means to be sated.

Happy Harbor comics will be crushed by Godzilla. IDW offered a cute promotion in the recent Previews: order 500 copies of Godzilla #1 and you will get your store will put on the cover… being crushed by Godzilla. I liked the idea, but moving 500 copies of Godzilla? Well Happy Harbor is juming into the breach!

“Why are we pimping a Godzilla comic? See that picture and the big empty space under his foot. Happy Harbor is going to be there! Yep, a special limited edition cover variant of this issue will feature Godzilla stomping on your very own Happy Harbor! This variant will be limited to 500 copies and with more than 600 file customers, you better get your advance orders in fast!”

Happy Harbor have also been updating photos of their ongoing reno to the new shop. It looks like after expanding to 4 shops, then closing 2 of them, then moving the remaining 2, HH is renting a large space they can grow in to.

Check out the Harry Kremer Award hanging on the beam.

Business is good in Edmonton as Quantum Comics is now open 7 days a week, having cut the Monday-off day which is so common for US based comic shops.

Not comics: Thunderground in St. Albert is hosting a midnight Magic The Gathering event. It’s limited to 8 participants: “If you know how to play Magic and can play quickly (emphasis on “quickly“), then this event is just for you!” Crazy.

British Columbia

Grey Haven Hobbies celebrated it’s 17th Anniversary this month.
