Cleaning up the Retailer listing

I have wanted to do a clean up of our retail listing for some time now. I had a hard time believing that there are 310 comic shops in Canada, so it was time to go through the listings and get some up to date information.

Part of this revamp was to uncover new shops that sold product, and weed out the stores that have closed.

Added to each store’s listing were appropriate images that allow you to see if they are a member of an organization or have won an award. New tags added to each store:

  • Winner of the Harry Kremer Award for Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Retailer
    shuster_awards_winners_jpg
  • Participates in Free Comic Book Day
  • Member of ComicsPro, the Comic Professional Retail Organization
  • Winner of the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, for Best Comic Shop in the World
  • Member of the Canadian Booksellers Association

We started January with 310 shops, lets see where we ended:

Newfoundland
7 listed in January
5 remain open
2 closed

Nova Scotia
11 listed in January
8 open + 2 new stores = 10 Open stores
1 closed
2 stopped selling comics

New Brunswick
10 listed

PEI
2 listed

Quebec
42 listed
46 open
5 removed

Ontario
120 listed
127 open – many new and newly discovered shops in Ontario
16 removed from listing

Manitoba
19 listed
11 open
8 closed

Saskatchewan
9 listed
9 open + 1 newly discovered = 10 open

Alberta
39 listed
41 open – 6 new shops uncovered in Alberta
4 closed

British Columbia
49 listed
55 open – 12 newly discovered shops in BC
6 removed from listing

Territories
2 listed

So by my math there are 318 comic book retailers in Canada, up from the 310 I didn’t think were possible. There are some caveats here:

  • stores are considered comic book stores, for the most part, if they stock new release comics, manga, BD or graphic novels.
  • there are stores on the list which deal exclusively in non-new/used product, but are considered to be comic book shops based on the quantity of material stocked
  • the Quebec listings could be much larger if BD stocked in book stores was considered, but like the absence of Chapter’s/Indigo bookstores, the focus is on comic book shops
  • you may quibble with some of these determinations, that’s okay
  • if you know of a store which is missing, has opened, or has closed, please let us know by contacting retailers@joeshusterawards.com

@ Goodhandy’s, 120 Church Street, 2nd Floor (Just south of Richmond, above Spring Rolls)
Free To Attend

Sponsored by The Beguiling, Goodhandy’s Nightclub, Drawn & Quarterly, and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival

Come one come all, to the book launch for the most eagerly-anticipated piece of Canadian literature in 2011—possibly the decade! Chester Brown’s PAYING FOR IT is Brown’s first entirely new graphic novel in nearly 10 years, an autobiographical account of his exploration of and participation in Toronto’s sex-work industry. This candid and intelligent memoir casts an illuminating light on the modern iterations of the world’s oldest profession, and is a perfectly-timed treatise in light of Canada’s own landmark court cases surrounding prostitution.

PAYING FOR IT will make its international debut at a book launch on Sunday, May 1st, the weekend before TCAF! This fun and unique evening will be hosted by NOW Magazine advice columnist and sex-worker advocate Sasha Von Bon Bon, and feature a reading/presentation of PAYING FOR IT by Chester along with an interview between Chester and Sasha, and a moderated Q&A. A signing will follow.

The event will take place at Goodhandy’s nightclub. Billed as “Toronto’s Pansexual Playground,” Goodhandy’s is the culmination of years of collaboration between Mandy Goodhandy (aka Amanda Taylor) and Todd Klinck, two Toronto club promoters and adult video producers.

PAYING FOR IT and a selection of Chester Brown’s previous graphic novels will be available for sale at the event.

“Chester Brown is perhaps the most transparent, honest and relevant voice remaining in contemporary comics, and this is, to my mind, his most powerful and affecting work to date. PAYING FOR IT explores life in the world’s oldest customer-base, and does so with heart, intelligence, and a complete lack of sentiment or self-justification. Rewarding repeated readings, this book will love you long time.” –ALAN MOORE

Hobby Star Marketing files an injunction against the UFC over the name “Fan Expo”

The Superman vs. Muhammed Ali statue - based on the famous cover by Neal Adams

According to Postmedia News and other sources — Hobby Star Marketing, the Toronto based producers of the comics and pop culture event Fan Expo Canada (TM) have filed an injunction against the producers of the UFC Fan Expo taking place this weekend in Toronto at the Direct Energy Centre over the use of the name Fan Expo in Canadian markets, saying that UFC Fan Expo is too similar to Fan Expo Canada and infringes upon their trademark.

The UFC Fan Expo is produced by Reed Pop (who also produce the New York Comic Con and C2E2) for Kuffa, LLC the company that owns the Ultimate Fighting Championship. While other UFC Fan Expos have taken place elsewhere this is the first time one is being held in Canada. HSM, a sports marketing company as well as a producer of pop culture events, contests the use of the phrase “Fan Expo” as well as the slogan  “the Ultimate Fan Experience”. HSM owner Aman Gupta, when contacted by PostMedia news, said:

We will do everything possible to protect our intellectual property and maintain the integrity of our event and our brand.

New Reliable Press to close in May after TCAF

Publisher Ed Brisson writes:

TCAF will be the last show for New Reliable Press. After May, I’m officially hanging up my publisher gloves and New Reliable Press will cease to publish any new material. The NRP catalog will still be available for purchase online, although by the end of May I will be closing down the New Reliable shop and Poseur Ink will become the primary online source for NRP books. Jason (Turner) has also started selling True Loves through his own online shop.

There are a myriad of reasons as to why I’m shutting things down. Part of it is that sales aren’t what they were when I started up in 2004. Part of is that I want to pursue my own creative work in comics (such as Murder Book). My own freelance work has also taken over and leaves me little time to devote to publishing. I don’t want to continue on without being able to focus my full attention to the books I publish — it’s not fair to the creators. So, instead, I’m closing up shop.

I want to thank everyone I’ve worked with over the past 6 years and everyone who’s supported New Reliable. I’m proud of the books that we’ve put out and am thrilled to have had the chance to work with so many talented people.

Please, be cool and continue to support small press. Check the publishers linked under “Other Publishers” in the sidebar. They all deserve your business.

2009's Jan's Atomic Heart by Simon Roy, published by New Reliable Press for which Roy was nominated for Outstanding Canadian Cartoonist in 2010.

Both Ed and Jason Turner will be making one final appearance officially as New Reliable Press at TCAF on May 7/8, and they’ll have the full NRP catalog of books available for sale at their table, including Turner’s 40 Year Project and Brisson’s collected Murder Book (for which he is nominated in the JSA Webcomics creator category with Simon Roy).

ARTISTS HELP JAPAN: TORONTO RAISES $20,000

For Immediate Release:

ARTISTS HELP JAPAN: TORONTO RAISES $20,000
Toronto comic artists and DJs band together for Japanese Quake & Tsunami Relief

Artists Help Japan: Toronto is proud to announce that their 12 hour live art/DJ event on April 17th was an extraordinary success, raising $20,000 towards Tsunami and Quake relief in Japan.

Spearheaded by a consortium of Toronto illustration studios, the Artists Help Japan: Toronto event was the local iteration of a charity movement begun by Dice Tsutsumi at Pixar. The Toronto edition featured live art and DJ music, a silent auction and dozens of artists selling commissioned drawings, which raised about $18,000 over the 12 hour event. Event organizers UDON Entertainment have stepped in with an additional $2000 donation to help bring the final total to $20,000, with all proceeds being donated to the Canadian Red Cross.

The organizers of the event would like to thank all of the talented artists, illustrators, and DJs who donated their time and expertise, and the hundreds of Torontonians that came out in support of this event. The organizers will continue their various fund raising efforts over the weeks and months to come, including a series of special auctions featuring artworks donated by artists at the fundraiser! Look for details on these auctions in the next week.

Some words of thanks from the organizers:

Erik Ko, founder of UDON Entertainment: “I have a lot of friends and colleagues in Japan who were affected by this unfortunate event. I felt a real need to try and lend a helping hand to the people there and I really appreciate so many people supporting us! Thank you so much!”

Bobby Chiu, head of Imaginism studio: “People were incredibly generous with their money that day. It was truly touching to see a city come together to support the people of Japan.”

Alvin Lee, comic artist on Street Fighter and Birds of Prey: “It was awe inspiring to see the outpour of support and compassion from Toronto’s Art and Music scene. To give back to a country that has influenced so many of today’s artists, including myself – I felt like it was the least I could do.”

Krystle Tabujara, Library Services Coordinator for The Beguiling: “Having recently travelled to the Pacific Rim with my partner, I felt an obligation to be a part of such a great cause. It was an honour to be working alongside some of Toronto’s most talented artists.”

Jim Zubkavich, writer/creator of Skullkickers from Image Comics: “All of us involved with this event feel a deep connection to Japan and we’re ecstatic that so many people came out to show their support. To the artists, musicians and donators – Thank you everyone!”

Christopher Butcher, manager of The Beguiling and Director of the Toronto Comics Art Festival: “Japan has been an inspiring, near-mythical presence in my life since I was very young, and their culture and traditions have had a huge influence on my writing and career. Coming together with so many like-minded people to give something back has been similarly inspiring, and I’m humbled by the generosity of our volunteers, artists, DJs, and the hundreds of attendees who came to the event. Thanks everyone and please, if at all possible, don’t stop giving.”

The organizers would also like to thank the many volunteers and supporters who helped make the event a success, including: all of the wonderful artists and publishers who donated art and other items for our silent auction; Jeff at Imaginism; Michael, Akiko, Magda, Marc, Andrew, and Shane who helped out on the day-of; Peter Birkemoe and The Beguiling; Joe Saturnino and the entire staff of Revival.

Aurora Borealice by Joan Steacy

Joan Thornborrow Steacy will debut her autobio-graphic novel Aurora Borealice at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, May 7-8 2011!

www.joansteacy.blogspot.com

www.torontocomics.com

AURORA BOREALICE by Joan Thornborrow Steacy

“Aurora Borealice is the first of four graphic novels that chronicle my quest to find a voice in a rapidly changing technological world. It begins in the early 70’s, when I met a number of people who dramatically shaped my life: Ken Steacy, a crazy comic book artist, Eric McLuhan, an inspiring professor at art college, and media guru Marshall McLuhan…”

AURORA BOREALICE

Written and Illustrated by Joan Thornborrow Steacy

96 pages, B&W with duotoned soft cover 6.5”x9.5”  $15

Special TCAF debut edition of 50 signed and numbered copies

“The Alice of Aurora Borealice is brilliant, talented, and a functional illiterate who believes what she’s been told all her life, until with the aid of a supportive boyfriend and a healthy dose of Marshall McLuhan, she breaks free of her labels. Aurora Borealice is wittily written and charmingly drawn – roar, Alice!”

Trina Robbins - Writer and Herstorian, excerpt from the introduction

“Joan Steacy offers an interesting new door into a moment in cultural history now up for reevaluation. A gentle and thoughtful look at the recent past that feels far away at the same time.”

Douglas Coupland - Generation A, Player One, Marshall McLuhan: You Know Nothing of My Work!

“Joan Steacy’s Aurora Borealice is a whimsical, heartfelt and insightful look at the burgeoning Toronto art scene of the 1970′s. A natural storyteller, her vivid characters come to life with her beautiful cartooning.”

Jeff Lemire Essex County, Sweet Tooth

Aurora Borealice is delicate, tough, and direct. It’s about the box school systems try to force you in, and how destructive it is. But Joan Steacy decided who she was going to be. This is that story.”

Paul Chadwick - Concrete

“The Imagery of a half-built CN Tower loomed over this book well after I’d finished reading it. Joan has managed to structure a graphic novel around a time and place that I never experienced but am now nostalgic for nonetheless. Like the unfinished architecture inside, Joan is attaining majestic artistic heights here while circumcising the medium and leaving us with Canada’s latest freestanding masterpiece. A beautiful, heartfelt triumph”.

Kazoo report

Guelph was the place to be on Saturday for anyone interested in independent comics, webcomics and zines. The Kazoo Fest Zine and Comic Expo saw more than forty creators (including Gene Day Noms Jason Bradshaw and Nick Maandag!) gather in the Norfolk United Church for this free event that drew a steady crowd out of the cold, wet weather. Originally started in 2008, this was the first year the Dragon sponsored the event and helped draw in comic creators from across the greater Toronto area. The event was a fantastic showcase for small press and zine creators that would usually get lost in the artist alley of larger conventions.

The after party that followed included Dragon owner Jennifer Haines delivering an updated version of her Women in Comics paper and the introduction of the Kazoo Fest Zine and Comic Awards. The award winners were chosen from books and zines that were submitted at the Expo on Saturday afternoon and the jury was made up of myself (Amy Chop, manager of the Dragon), Sam Ack from Kazoo and Lindsay Gibb from Broken Pencil magazine. The jury was also joined by some volunteers from the Joe Shuster Awards who helped out at the Dragon’s table during the day.

Summer Tears #1 by Harley R. Pageot and Andrea Manica

The winners were presented with their awards by event emcee Robert Haines and were as follows:

  • Best Debut: “Wich” Curated by Averill Smith
  • Best Comic: “Summer Tears #1” by Harley R. Pageot and Andrea Manica
  • Best Zine (written): “Team Dreams” by the Royal City Roller Girls

This was a great event and we hope to see everyone, and more, again next year!
