DC: Will they save the direct market or destroy it?

Justice League #1 (due 8/31) by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee will probably be a massive hit for DC, but it's the first of 52 title reboots.

There’s a lot of talk today about the news of the restructuring DC Comics is making to their line of DC Universe titles in September. There’s a lot we don’t know about the DC reboot, but there’s a few specific details which are a mix of good and bad for the foundation of local comic book shops that keeps the Direct Market going – and seeing as how 2011 has not been the greatest year for many of those retailers to date, what I’m reading is making me concerned.

The Good: A new Justice League #1 by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. That’s a POWERHOUSE creative team that will automatically put the Justice League at the top of the sales charts. It’s the kind of head turner that, combined with the right publicity, will bring people back to comic shops to buy Justice League.

The Bad: All of DC Comics line will be getting new #1 books. 52 new first issues to be exact. Now knowing the superhero market, people will be curious and in September, they will want to know the new status quo and many (or at least those with a couple of hundred dollars to spend) will purchase all of the new first issues. Speculators will want full sets, or at least that’s what DC and many retailers will assume they will want. As retailers attest regularly, it’s a risky business ordering books sight-unseen, and sadly, if the rumours are correct about some of the creative teams these books may be dead in the water before they start. I see retailers ordering even more conservatively on the second issues of the new books by concepts that have never been sales successes as a result – and hopefully they won’t take a bath on the first issues if they order too heavily, but we’ll see a big drop on orders in October as speculating on new books is dangerous in this economy. No company has ever had a hugely successful partial line reboot. Even those successful DC revamps of the 1980′s post-Crisis were staggered and creator focused (Byrne on Superman, Perez on Wonder Woman) – it was confusing then and never a total line reboot (some may see that as the problem with what happened then and in subsequent years, and they may be right) – but this seems to be confusion x 52 – a full on ‘Heroes Reborn’ (the Marvel reboot of the Avengers titles into an alternate universe while the other Marvel titles soldiered on). If it fails, then what? Back to Old Coke?

The Good: A great jumping on point for new readers. You want an entry level point for the DCU, here it is.

The Bad: A new continuity means a complete disconnect for older readers, who will use this as an excuse to walk away.I’m not convinced that the current market wants to start fresh when they’ve been reading Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Justice League, Wonder Woman and Superman stories that have been percolating for years under the same group of writers and editors who are overseeing these changes. If certain characters get to keep their histories intact, it will be even more confusing to see them interact with new incarnations of characters that are receiving major revisions, such as Superman (by what’s been discussed over at Bleeding Cool, Newsarama and Comic Book Resources).

The controversial: Day-and-date digital publishing. This is the game changer, really. There’s tremendous opportunities here for retailers who are in the position to use Comixology to profit from this, but there’s more concern that the many retailers who don’t will eventually lose out… if you can read it on your iPad on new release Wednesday, what’s the incentive to travel to your local retailer and buy a copy? It’s definitely forward thinking but also a nail in the coffin for some retailers if the print readership rejects the reboot. Day and date digital definitely changes the way we work here at the JSAs. What if some titles are digital successes and print failures (or vice-versa)?

I’m curious to see which Canadian creators are part of the revamp. With 52 series, all with different creative teams, no doubt some Canucks will be on some of these books. Francis Manapul, for example, can’t discuss what he’s working on… at least not until the solicits come out in a couple of weeks for the September titles. There is definitely an “accident on the highway” feel to all of this, so it will nonetheless be interesting to see how this works out.

We would also be interested in hearing what people think about it, especially retailers.

Interviews: Jeff Lemire on Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown

Newsarama’s Vaneta Rogers chats with Jeff Lemire about his upcoming Flashpoint mini-series: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown

And just to get to work with this character is great. When Grant Morrison’s Seven Soldiers stuff was coming out, I thought the Frankenstein mini-series the best part of it. I always wished that DC had done something more with the character. So it’s really cool for me to do it. I mean, it’s also intimidating to write a Grant Morrison character. If you try to be like Grant Morrison, you’re doomed to fail. You just have to take the character and do your thing with it. I’m definitely not trying to replicate his style or even his take on the character. I’m just trying to take the essence of the character he created and do my own thing with it.

The first issue of the three issue mini-series arrives in comic book shops on June 8, 2011.

Countdown to Calgary

Coming up quickly is what has rapidly become the second largest pop culture event in the country: THE CALGARY COMIC & ENTERTAINMENT EXPO. This a big year for the Expo, as it is the first to run for THREE days, JUNE 17-19, 2011.

I went to the event in 2009 and had a great time, and that visit laid the groundwork for this year being the first that the JOE SHUSTER AWARDS will be presented outside of Ontario.

This past weekend we finalized the majority of the winners of the 2011 awards, only one category remains undecided as I write this.

Now it’s time to:

- set the graphics for and have the awards made
- create and print the ceremony invitations and ceremony guide.
- finalize who will be doing what at the ceremony on June 18

The 11th Hour: Finalizing 2011 and Organizational Discussions

If it seems quiet around here, it’s because we’re holding our breaths in anticipation of the decisions currently being made by our FOUR (yes 4!) Juries this year:

  • “ART” : Artist, Cover Artist, Webcomics, Colourist
  • “STORY” (bilingual jury required): Writer, Cartoonist
  • “INDUSTRY”:  Publisher, Self-Publisher, Retailer
  • “KIDS”: Comics for Kids

Everyone is supposed to send over their choices on Friday, and then we’ll have the weekend to debate/discuss and finalize by Monday next week: Monday May 30th is zero hour for decisions. Once we have them, we’ll get to work on finalizing the audio/visual part of our ceremony presentation and the award plaques go off to be made.

I hope to have an announcement this week about the June 18 ceremony hosting duties.

Meanwhile, I’ve been having a thoughtful discussion with American cartoonist Dustin Harbin on the inclusion/exclusion of webcomics and award philosophies over on his blog. He makes some great points, and I never balk at a chance to do some naval-gazing to question what we are doing here and why, and sometimes I do understand that our stance may annoy or aggravate certain people, but I hope that they can also understand that the reason why these awards exist is to be fundamentally positive — not negative, about the Canadian comics scene. The JSAs are very much committed and connected to supporting a retail system that sells the print products (specifically comic books and graphic novels) that we award with the awards for those that create comic books and graphic novels.

Administering these awards is a largely bureaucratic business (and an unthankful one at that!), with lots of rules and definitions in place to establish categories for awards (which drives some of us as mad as it may drive some of you), but structured awards ultimately demand rules and a guiding philosophy.  Organizational awards are often the result of  a lot of discussion and defining (and redefining!), and the fact that we are in the position of offering creative awards for a commercial art form means trying to strike some balance between the two. It means establishing eligibility parameters, identifying those creators that fit in the parameters of the award criteria, getting the nomcoms to select the outstanding creative work from within that group and then having a jury select a finalist from within that smaller group.

Anyway, lots of food for though for 2012… but for now we must focus and finish up 2011! Best of luck to all of the nominees in advance!

Happy 55th Birthday Dave Sim!

May is quite the month for Canadian cartoonist birthdays!

Dave Sim goes into his 55th year a busy guy with the bi-monthly publications Glamourpuss and Cerebus Archive (only available through Comics Xpress) as well as his weekly Cerebus TV broadcast and the occasional private commission!

Congratulations Dave and Happy Birthday!

You can give him a birthday gift by signing his petition if you don’t believe that he is a misogynist.

Happy Birthday Joe Kilmartin!

Please join us in wishing a very Happy Birthday to JOE KILMARTIN!

Joe is the manager of Dragon Lady Comics in Toronto and someone I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for many years. He was a member of the Administrative Committee for many years before he had to take a step back when was promoted to his current managerial position at Dragon Lady, and has been a member of our Hall of Fame selection committee for the past two years. He’s a font of information and is one of the friendliest folks you’ll encounter working at a comics shop.

Congratulations Joe!

Happy 51st Birthday Chester Brown!

Right now he’s in the middle of the book tour for his newly released memoir Paying For It, published by Drawn & Quarterly — having just finished up stops in Toronto, Chicago, New York and Montreal – this Wednesday he’s off to Vancouver and Seattle. He’s also slated to appear at the San Diego Comic Con in July and SPX in September.

The book, which debuted just prior to TCAF on May 1st, is definitely available in book stores in Canada already (I saw it in the Indigo on Saturday night so I can confirm it is already available), and arrives this Wednesday (May 18) to comic book shops via Diamond Distributors, Inc. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, as my comic arrives on Wednesday at my LCS.

The book is getting tremendous attention in the mainstream and comics press, and is definitely one of the key releases of 2011, as Chester Brown is one of the country’s most widely recognized and accomplished cartoonists.

Next month he’s being inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame arm of these awards in Calgary.

But TODAY is his birthday so Happy Birthday Chester Brown and congratulation on the release of PAYING FOR IT!

13 Canadian comics creators join international effort for primates

13 Canadian creators have contributed to Panels for Primates, an online charity anthology that ends its run on June 1st.

SO, WHAT THE HECK IS PANELS FOR PRIMATES?

Panels for Primates is an ongoing, online charity anthology of primate comics that has been updating every Wednesday with new material at ACT-I-VATE (http://act-i-vate.com) since October of last year, all to benefit the Primate Rescue Center in Nicholasville, KY.  Like the other content on the ACT-I-VATE webcomics site, the ever-growing Panels for Primates archive can be viewed absolutely free.  The big difference is that Panels for Primates readers are encouraged to swing over to http://www.primaterescue.org/ and make a donation.  Panels for Primates will finish its online run on June 1st, but a story by the final Canadian creator got posted this week.

HOW INTERNATIONAL IS IT?

The project features work by creators from Canada, the U.S., Israel, Britain, Mexico, Germany, and Indonesia.

UDON to Launch “UDON Presents” Graphic Novel Line with RandomVeus Vol.1

UDON ENTERTAINMENT PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RANDOMVEUS DELIVERS INSANITY WITH EVERY PARCEL!

UDON to Launch “UDON Presents” Graphic Novel Line with RandomVeus Vol.1

Toronto, ON – May 10, 2011 – All-out action meets off-the-wall wackiness in RANDOMVEUS VOl.1! Springing from the mind of artist Jeffrey ‘Chamba’ Cruz, this original graphic novel adventure features the tripped-out tales of an interdimensional courier company. The book will be the launch title for UDON Entertainment’s new ‘UDON Presents’ graphic novel line.

Created by Jeffrey ‘Chamba’ Cruz and co-writer Leonard Bermingham, RandomVeus stars bouffant-sporting hero Raimundo and the team of One-Dimensional Couriers as they deliver mysterious packages to every corner of the wild world known as the RandomVeus!  Octopus ninjas, jazz-playing demons, buxom lady-pirates, cyborg gorillas, samurai mushrooms, and one giant furry squid monster are all on tap in this zaniest of zany adventures!

RandomVeus Vol.1 (MAY111239) is the first title in UDON’s new ‘UDON Presents’ line, a series of original graphic novels presented in oversized (8.25”x11.25”) and hardcover format. “We want to give our artists’ stories the best presentation possible right out the gate, so our focus is shifting to this deluxe format for our releases, dropping the monthly ‘floppy’ comic entirely,” says UDON managing editor Matt Moylan. “While comic book sales are down all over the industry, UDON continues to do very well with our trade paperbacks and art books. We’re taking the best of both by producing full length graphic novels at the same oversized dimensions that readers of our art books and ‘Ultimate Edition’ collections have come to enjoy.”

Beyond RandomVeus, UDON has several other original graphic novels currently in production, and also plans to present its future video game-based comic stories in the same oversized format. RandomVeus Vol.1 goes on sale July 2011.

40 Days left…

It's CRUNCH time!

… and the four unique juries are all hard at work looking at all of the books and comics.

It’s hard to believe that we are a mere 40 days and forty nights away from the presentation of the 7th annual Joe Shuster Awards for Canadian Comic Book Creators on Saturday, June 18th, 2011 at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo.

As the only National comics award to embrace and include all types of comics and graphic novels produced by Canadians, we’re really quite stoked about being able to present the awards in Western Canada for the first time and the fine folks at the Calgary Expo have been great with helping us out and being our host con.

10 awards are being presented for Outstanding Canadian Comics & Graphic Novels:

- Artist
- Writer
- Cartoonist (Writer/Artist)
- Colourist
- Cover Artist
- Publisher

Note: For the 6 categories listed above, the comics the creators are being honoured for had to be published for the first time in either French or English during the 2010 calendar year. They also had to be professionally distributed through existing channels of distribution, such as Diamond Distributors, Inc.

Plus:

- Outstanding Webcomics Creator / Creative Team (for new content available online in 2010)

- The Harry Kremer Retailer Award

- The Gene Day Self-Publisher Award (for self-published, non-professionally distributed original content print comics first made available in 2010)

- The Comics for Kids Award (professionally distributed original books that debuted in 2010 and are aimed at readers 14 years of age and younger)

As well, two Hall of Fame induction presentations will take place – for CHESTER BROWN and TODD McFARLANE.

We’ve received confirmation that a number of nominees will be in attendance at the Calgary Expo this year, including Scott Chantler, Francis Manapul, Jeff Lemire, Stuart and Kathryn Immonen, J. Torres, Jim Zubkavich, Connor McCreery, Kate Beaton, Sylvain Lemay, Fiona Staples, Camilla D’Errico, and Connor Willumsen. Things are looking good for James Stokoe, Emily Carroll and Cameron Stewart to also be there for the event in June, and we’ll hopefully be confirming a few more creators will be present.

Over the next month as things get finalized we’ll be letting you know about our 2011 hosts and other significant details about the 2011 Joe Shuster Awards!
