The TORONTO CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP provides aspiring cartoonists with a chance to study with working professionals in the North American comic book, webcomics, animation and illustration fields. The TCW’s innovative FIT TO PRINT class doubles as a pro working environment. It simulates a freelance gig for a mainstream comics publisher, complete with division of labour, strictly enforced deadlines, and editorial feedback at every stage of production. Students work on pre-determined characters and concepts, further mimicking the pro world where so much work is done on established properties. HOLMES INCORPORATED is the first in a series of publications that will feature TCW student artists and writers. More info HERE.

Ty Templeton has worked in the comics industry for more than twenty-five years, contributing scripts and art to Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Mad Magazine, The Simpsons, The National Lampoon, Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor, the Avengers, the Justice League and many others. He’s also been a comics publisher, editor, colourist, letterer, teacher, and a lifelong reader of these things. (Don’t get him started on his stage or TV careers, or the disastrous chapter of his life playing Gumby on TV.) His greatest creations are his four kids, and a musical single he once put out with Alan Moore, guest-starring members of the bands BAHAUS and APRIL WINE. Back from SDCCI: Eisners, celebs and more.

Just got home a few minutes ago and as I’m waiting for the a/c to cool down my apartment I thought I’d post a quick update.

COMIC-CON

SDCCI 2011 will go down in history, at least for me, as the least enjoyable and most enjoyable time I’ve had at this event since I started making the annual trek down in 2003. It was the least enjoyable because I was (a) sick and (b) as a result in a bitter mood. I found the overwhelming number of people to be really unbearable, especially when trying to get around. Comic-Con is just too big and I’m not sure the walk from end to end is really worth it. This is the first year where my responsibilities at the event were completely for Fan Expo, so it really ended up being a case of touching base with people. So I didn’t have as much running around to do as I did in years past when I was there working for CGC.

Unfortunately something happened on Wednesday, perhaps a parasite of some kind or just an illness, but I could not eat and I basically went from Wednesday through to Friday night surviving on Coke Zero and the occasional piece of fruit or handful of chips. By Friday night (the Eisners) things were calming down and I was able to enjoy a nice meal on Saturday evening.

I was able to meet briefly with Todd McFarlane to give him his Hall of Fame award. I’ll post a pic when I get it.

THE EISNERS

I can’t stress how archaic the Eisners continue to be. This will be the 9th time I’ve attended the ceremony and it’s still the same old plodding formula. Main host introduces segment host introduces presenters, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat. I twittered that we should do it – I guarantee we would be through those 20 some odd categories in 2 hours instead of 4.

This is the second year that Jenn has been up for the Spirit of Retailing Award and the second time we’ve been amazed at how little the organizers feel about the nominees for that award. The nominees are not allowed to enter the main seating area, but are obliged to sit in a first row “pro” section that makes the nominees feel pretty unwelcome. We sat behind the D+Q table and got to look at the backs of Tom Devlin, Peggy Burns and Chester Brown’s heads for three plus hours. And after listening to the same musical cue played over and over again ad nauseum I’m amazed that people are able to endure the full ceremony – I know I couldn’t.

Canadian Winners: Karl Kerschl won the online comics award (following the Shuster lead once again. 2009 – Cameron Stewart won the Shuster, 2010 he won an Eisner. In 2010 Kerschl won the Shuster, in 2011 he wins the Eisner. Look out Emily Carroll!). Darwyn Cooke won the writer/artist award for Parker: The Outfit. After we left it seems that the D+Q published Wilson by American cartoonist Dan Clowes won something.

At the show all I hear is about the Eisners are disconnected from Comic-Con, a last vestige the old con’s aristocracy. Many creators don’t go, and don’t want to go. They need to rethink what they are trying to accomplish and make this more enjoyable and back to being a proper community event.

I was saddened to learn that Dave Stevens’ mother had passed last month. Her speech last year was quite moving.

THE BOOKS

I hear that D+Q sold out of Hark! A Vagrant’s limited SDCCI run. Congratulations! I did swing by D+Q and picked up the limited edition hardcover of THE DEATH RAY by Dan Clowes.

Other books I picked up at Comic-Con: The Art of Joe Kubert by Bill Schelly (Fantagraphics), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: 1969 by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill (Top Shelf), The Complete Echo HC by Terry Moore, Supergods by Grant Morrison, plus art/sketchbooks from Ryan Ottley, Arthur Adams, Adam Hughes.

As for what I brought to get signed: 6 books by Jordi Bernet (Torpedo 1-3, Clara and two art books). One of the books had an inscription written in it by my friend Paul Truster and I suspect the mention of Jeff Singh (a local art collector and another friend) in the note resulted in him doing fantastic sketches in each one. I can still be a fanboy when I want to be.

THE STARS

I did end up meeting Chris Evans, star of Captain America, at the Marvel booth. I had some other celebrity sightings, including some of the stars of Lost, including producer JJ Abrams. In the Houston airport on the way home today I stood in the line at the bathroom behind Peter Dinklage, currently starring in HBO’s Game of Thrones. There were other pseudo-celebs prowling about – people you sort of recognize from being in stuff.

THE NEWS

Canadian news was lacking, but one big announcement is that FIONA STAPLES will be drawing SAGA with writer Brian K. Vaughan. We ran into Fiona on Saturday night and she’s very excited about it, as are we!

Laird announces changes to the Xeric Grant

Max Douglas covers the ending of the Xeric Grant in May 2012 over at Sequential. Many Canadian creators have received Xerics over the years, including Jeff Lemire, Nick Mandaag, Troy Little and Ethan Rilly. The announcement:

The Xeric Foundation’s upcoming 20th anniversary will bring
a changed focus in grant-giving.

“Roughly twenty years ago, I started something called the Xeric Foundation. It came about because, with the success of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” property that Kevin Eastman and I had created back in 1983, there were a lot of people asking for money. Many of these requests were legitimate and came from real need, and I wanted to find a way to deal with them in a fair and organized fashion.

I also wanted to help out struggling comic book creators. Having started TMNT with Kevin as a self-published venture, I knew very well how critical even a relatively small amount of money could be for success at that nascent stage.

The Xeric Foundation accomplished all that. The Foundation was able to give many grants to self-publishing comic book creators and local charitable organizations. To date, those grants have totaled more than $2,500,000, and those funds were split equally between the two aforementioned categories.

When I began the Xeric Foundation back in 1992, things were very different. The Internet — and web-based publishing — was in its infancy. This has changed, radically, and the Xeric Foundation needs to change accordingly.

The advent of essentially free web publishing has forever altered the way aspiring comic book creators can get their work out into the public eye. With this in mind, I have decided that it makes sense that the Xeric Foundation will no longer provide grants to self-publishing comic book creators, and instead devote all of its available grants funds to charitable organizations.

I’d like to thank all of the people who applied for (and sometimes received) those comic book grants, for their participation in an art form of great merit, as well as those who have applied for (and sometimes received) charitable grants. But I’d especially like to thank all the people who have served on the Xeric Grant committees, both those for the comic book grants and the charitable grants, who have worked without pay all these years, giving of their time and energy, reading and evaluating piles of grant applications. I would like to thank them by name, but — as it has been since the beginning of the Xeric Foundation — they prefer to remain anonymous. So… thank you all, from the bottom of my heart!”

–Peter Laird,   July 14, 2011

With this announcement, the foundation celebrates Peter Laird’s legacy and the many innovative comic books that were self-published with the support of Xeric grants.

There will be a final comic book review in May 2012.  Details can be found at the following link: FINAL GRANT APPLICATION. Please note that the November review is cancelled, allowing creators more time to prepare and present their best work.

Good luck to all of the dedicated self-publishers.  Get in there and show us what you’ve got during the last round of comic book grants!

Party!

Last night we had the Toronto wrap party and celebration for the 7th Annual Joe Shuster Awards and I get the impression that it was a great success! The 587 College space was a great venue, very casual and we had a relaxed 20 or so minute ceremony where we were able to honour local winners Francis Manapul, John Martz, Planete BD (not local but drove in for the party!), Anne Koyama, Scott Chantler and Tin Can Forest.

Tyrone is currently traveling, but it was great to see the rest of the group out for the evening – Andrew, Allison, Jenn and Robert, Deb and I were all really happy with how well things worked out. It was also great to see a variety of Toronto’s creators come out to support their friends and associates! It was really a meeting of worlds and styles and from an organizing standpoint it’s always satisfying to see the various communities come together and learn from each other’s adventures in the world of comics. All of the various Mill Street beers that we provided were consumed as well (all gone when we wrapped) — the after party went on to about 11:30.

So thanks again to everyone that came out, congratulations to all of the winners and special thanks to the Toronto Cartoonists Workshop for allowing us to use their great space!

Also – one last note – I’d like to thank to Planete BD for coming to Toronto for this event – we hope you had a great time – and for being our Montreal ambassadors — they will be presenting Emilie Villeneuve and Julie Rocheleau with their awards at their store in the near future for La Fille Invisible.

Diamond Digital set to arrive in September 2011

For Immediate Release

14 July 2011 – Diamond Digital – the joint venture between Diamond Comic Distributors and iVerse Media which will empower brick and mortar comic shops to sell digital content – announced [on July 14] that in September, Diamond’s retail comic shop customers will be able to pre-generate codes redeemable for new digital comics.

The Diamond Digital program, with components in both physical stores and on comic shop web sites, is an initiative unlike anything undertaken in other retail markets. Many of the comics in the program will be available first from comic shops or will contain special bonus material unavailable elsewhere. Participating stores will be able to sell a wide range of new comics, digital back issues and digital backlist graphic novels. A key feature of the initiative is the Print PLUS option, which allows consumers to purchase a digital companion copy of a print comic book, usually for just 99¢ more.

According to Dave Bowen, Director of Diamond Digital, “The September launch date has actually been our target for months, but we didn’t want to announce it until we’d passed certain critical unit testing benchmarks. This worked out well because of the way our Beta Test group of retailers has evolved. After we put together our Beta Test group, an international assembly of more than fifty businesses, the participants suggested many great ideas and improvements, including added functionality in support of the individual retailer web-site based part of the initiative.”

The beta process, supported by close partner and industry technical leader iVerse Media, LLC is now well underway. Michael Murphey, CEO of Iverse said, “Part of the beta test group is currently doing dry-run testing of the web site capabilities we’ve created for them. The advanced group, companies with existing sophisticated e-commerce web sites, are beginning to integrate our API into their processes.”

Bowen says the next phase is to get physical. “In August we plan to beta test new weekly digital comic offerings in the physical stores, giving our code generation and redemption processes a good workout. We’ll also use this time for retailer training with the beta stores and customer service training on the Diamond end. By September we should have a more mature, well-tested process that any store can join with minimal effort.

“All of our Retailer Services will be driven from http://www.diamonddigital.com,” Bowen says. “Retailers can go there now and read the general information about the program. In September, we plan to turn on full login capabilities for all Diamond accounts, including UK and International retail customers. Participating publishers will also be able to log in and see how their material is being represented, monitor their sales, and gauge the effectiveness of the program.”

On the publisher side of the program, Bowen noted that more than 30 publishers—including IDW Publishing, Image Comics, Archie, NBM/Papercutz, and Top Shelf— are currently participating in Diamond Digital, and that the number continues to grow. “We recently confirmed the addition of Image Comics, which is very exciting because it brings a cross-section of creative voices with broad consumer appeal to the program. We’ve also been adding some unexpected publishers like Within Temptation, a symphonic metal band that produces a comic which is integrally tied in to their music. Their lead singer, Sharon Janny den Adel, is providing an exclusive video clip which will be bundled with the digital comic. We’re still in talks with many other publishers and expect participation to expand continuously as a natural part of the business process.

“We’ll be launching Diamond Digital with dozens of new releases and nearly 2,000 back issues,” Bowen added, “many of them graphic novel length. All of those digital issues have been created in the central Diamond system so we can invoice retailers and pay publishers correctly. This is only one of technical challenges we’re meeting as September draws closer, and we are confident that all concerned will appreciate our efforts to get every detail of this launch right.”

Creative changes on Batman: The Dark Knight

Issue 3 ships this week, written and drawn by David Finch.

In order to complete the series in time for the September relaunch, Windsor’s Jason Fabok will step in as interior artist for issues 4 and 5, both of which will ship between now and the end of August.

Although #1 of the September relaunch was announced as being written and drawn by David Finch, the writer for the relaunch is in fact Paul Jenkins — Jenkins has been announced as the writer for issue #2 and has confirmed that he is also writing #1, something which did not make it to the final solicitations for issue #1.

Finch will continue on with the art for #1, and will do the main covers for the series. Interior art for #2 will be by Jason Fabok and Richard Friend, and it’s been intimated that Finch and Fabok will alternate as interior artists on the book.

UPDATE: In other DC news, Ken Lashley will only be doing the cover to Blackhawks #2. Interior art is by Graham Nolan and Norm Rapmund.

This is indicative of DC’s plan to ensure that the new titles ship on time. All creators hired on relaunched titles were told they needed to have three issues in the can by the end of August — and it looks like DC is being adamant about their deadlines threat — the book has to be ready by a certain time and if it isn’t, the assignment will given to someone else.

Infinite Kung Fu: The Trailer & More

Debuting next week at the San Diego Comic Con — Kagan McLeod’s Infinite Kung Fu!

“The best elements of horror, Westerns, and of course, kung fu films are seamlessly interlaced to tell a highly imaginative tale. You couldn’t sandblast the smile from my face as I read this.” — Ain’t It Cool News

“INFINITE KUNG FU is glorious and deranged in the way that all comics should be.” — Warren Ellis, author of Transmetropolitan, Red, and Crooked Little Vein

Read the first 250 pages online at Top Shelf 2.0!

Infinite Kung Fu walks you through familiar corridors in the house of martial mayhem, but still smashes your face through walls of wonder and into rooms where kung fu is afraid to go.

Catastrophe has knocked most of the world back to the middle ages — and to make matters worse, the dead are rising from the grave as zombies (reincarnation gone wrong)! In this world, where the way of the fist is a way of life, ex-soldier Lei Kung must infiltrate the evil emperor’s five kung fu armies and stop him from destroying all life on the planet. Allegiances are blurred as techniques are perfected, and Lei Kung becomes less certain who’s friend and who’s foe in each chapter!

Fists fly, limbs are lost and blood vessels burst in this tale of furious rivals, supernatural masters, walking corpses, and above all, raging kung fu! — a 464-page deluxe flexi-cover graphic novel, 6.75″ x 9.5″

Parker: The Martini Edition delayed until October

Although Diamond has it on their advance shipping list for July 13th, Darwyn Cooke has issued a statement indicating that the release of Parker: The Martini Edition has been delayed until October:

Hey everyone,

Hope this finds you all well. This is the kind of post that I’m not used to writing, so bear with me. It has become apparent that the Parker: Martini Edition, which was scheduled for a July release, will not be ready to ship on its’ scheduled date. I wanted to break this news here on my blog, because this is 100% my fault. I wanted to make sure everyone understood that my publisher (IDW) and fabulous editor (Scott Dunbier) weren’t blamed for this delay.

It’s a rare occurrence for me to ship something later than it was supposed to. I want to assure everybody looking forward to this book that it is shipping late because of my commitment to making this a very special product and not just a reprint edition. This simply has taken me more time than I anticipated. After much consideration, Scott and I decided the best time for release would be during the Long Beach convention in October.

I’d like to apologize to all of the readers who’ve advanced ordered this book. I want you to know that I am doing everything I can to make sure the Parker:Martini edition will be worth the wait.

Thanks,

Darwyn
