Happenings: A C4 Update

The Prairie Geek has pointed out another unfortunate aspect of Wizard’s departure:

Outside of time, one of the biggest hurdles C4 is facing is filling the content gap left behind by Wizard’s departure. All of the guests who were organized by Wizard to attend the con were under contract with Wizard, meaning they have no commitment to participate in C4 under another organizer. And all of the vendors and artists who had paid for booths are left trying to get their refunds from Wizard, then having to re-register for River City. Fans who pre-paid for tickets will ultimately be in the same position as vendors.

Given the recent track record on refunds given for subscriptions (as in, none were given), one can’t help but be concerned for the retailers and artist alley folks trying to get those hefty exhibiting fees back, or the fans who paid for advance tickets. Hopefully there aren’t many and they won’t face the same problems.

Watch out though, as Wizard is still selling passes for the event online. If you paid by credit card I strongly recommend you contact your card provider as soon as possible.

The River City Conventions team has launched a brand new website and has announced guests for the event including celebs like Kevin Sorbo (Hercules, Andromeda), Adrienne Wilkinson (Xena), Kate Vernon (Battlestar Galactica), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Ethan Phillips (Star Trek: Voyager) and Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). They are also advertising a mystery guest. Featured Artist Guests include: Tommy Castillo, Echo Chernik, Nigel Sade, Steve Scott, Renee Witterstaetter, Dirk Strangely, Michael Golden, Amul Kumar, Mark Texeira and Rodney Ramos.

SDCCI: The Canadian Special Guests

Or more like… where are the Canadian special guests? I mean really, looking over the special guests this year I wonder what makes a person special at SDCCI? As a comics fan I’m having a hard time getting excited over the list they’ve posted of the usual standbys — of course there are exceptions like the great JODI BERNET who I will be going to see. Indeed, there are only three Canucks that I can find on the list, but they are some great ones – one JSA Hall of Fame inductee, and two JSA winning artists. Continue reading

SDCCI 2011: Your “Canadian Connection”

We are coming up quickly to the time of year when the Canadian comics “snowbirds” make their annual trek South for one week of the summer — the San Diego Comic-Con International takes place from July 20-24, 2011 and the JSA blog is your place for information on all things Canadian there! Over the next few weeks we’ll be updating the site with lots of who, what and where information so you can be prepared to meet up with your favourite Canadian creator and share that knowing smile that comes from being fellow strangers in a strange land.

It’s a big contingent from the Executive attending this year — basically everyone is going: Robert and Jennifer Haines, Allison Covey, Andrew Walsh, Tyrone Biljan and myself. We’ll be at the event making sure that Canada’s comic book industry award is well represented, catching up with friends and associates and checking out what’s new in the comics world in 2011. We’ll be touching base with Canadian creators, retailers, publishers and fans over the five days of the event and we might even get some material for the website. (I did buy that nifty voice recorder for the JSA ceremony last month so I might be able to get some additional use out of it after all.)

Pre-Release books available directly from the publisher: Infinite Kung Fu by Kagan McLeod (Top Shelf) Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton (Drawn & Quarterly).

Retailer Roundup – May/June, 2011

As you can imagine, we were really busy in May and June getting ready to hand out our annual awards. Which resulted in a never completed May version of Retailer Roundup.

Even more new shops have opened up recently (or been recently discovered, whichever), and a couple of deletions as well. Comic retailing is fluid, that’s for sure.

Here is what happened in comic shops across Canada these past 2 months. Note: this information was gathered by perusing the retailers websites, as well as email I’ve received from stores across Canada. If you have an event to promote, let us know! Send an email to retailers@joeshusterawards.com. And if you have an upcoming event that isn’t listed here, then I was not able to find it on your website. If I can’t find it, your customers can’t find it. Continue reading

Finbow, along with actor Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) and writer Alan Grant formed the publishing house in the UK, but the central offices are based out of Canmore, Alberta. http://www.renegadeartsentertainment.com

It was great to reconnect with Alex at the Calgary Expo and see and learn about the projects that they have been working on, and there are two that I think are of particular interest and connect with the Canadian creative scene that we are here to promote:

SHAME – CONCEPTION (1 of 3)

I can’t believe that this series is not getting more attention. Written by Canadian comics legend LOVERN KINDZIERSKI, with fully painted art by the astounding JOHN BOLTON and lettered by the esteemed TODD KLEIN.

Shame is a Dark Fantasy Graphic Novel, Suggested for Mature Readers. The concept: When the purest woman on earth allows herself one selfish wish, it is enough to conceive the most evil woman the world has ever known. Shame: Conception introduces a world much like our own but with magick and those with the power to control it, for good and for evil. In the first tale we meet Shame, discover the unique circumstances of her creation, and follow her choices as her true nature is revealed. It is difficult to say more without giving away too much of the story, and it is a story of such scope and imagination that it would be seriously remiss of us to lessen your reading experience with spoiler now.

To reserve a copy at your comic book store give them this code:

MAY111180

The first issue just went to print and debuted at the Calgary Expo but the series was made available for order through Diamond MAY111180 / ISBN: 978-1-908217-01-1 and should be shipping to stores who ordered it on JULY 13 (next week).

THE LOXLEYS AND THE WAR OF 1812

Writer Alan Grant’s epic adventure of a family caught up in the conflict that helped to define both Canada and America into the nations they would become. With the Bicentenary fast approaching Renegade will be publishing several books to commemorate the events.

The 102 page comic book is being drawn by Claude St. Aubin, coloured by Lovern Kindzerski and lettered by Todd Klein. It will also feature a 30 page summary of the war written by well known Canadian historical author Mark Zuehlke.

The Loxley’s left America after the American war of Independence to start a new life in the Niagara region of Canada, only to find themselves thrust back into the madness of war when America declared war against Britain and the Canadas.

Adapted from Aurora Loxley’s journals, the story follows the family members involvement in the war and their challenges at home dealing with the chaos and violence of the time.

The project will be accompanied by a number of interesting initiatives that we were given some information on but will share with you here on the blog when more information is made available. The project will premiere later this year and the preview art we were shown in Calgary looks fantastic!

Happenings: Niagara Falls Comic-Con 2011 – July 9th

People have been trying to put something together in Niagara Falls for a few years now, but it looks as if Niagara Fall’s PULP COMICS has succeeded in organizing an event for this upcoming weekend:

Pulp Comics Presents the Niagara Falls Comic-Con 2011

This is the first-ever Comic Con in Niagara Falls taking place at Dave & Buster’s on Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, Canada! Dave & Buster’s features Niagara’s ONLY Lazer Tag/Maze arena, and more than 200 of the latest video games covering more than 40,000 square feet on three floors!

Featuring members of the Star Wars Fighting 501st Canadian Garrison, former WWE Superstar “Leaping Lanny” Poffo, Comic Book Artists’ Alley, Comic Book Vendors, the Back to the Future Time Machine Delorean and more being added to the event every week!

Special live Broadcast from the gang at “Get Your Geek On”
www.getyourgeekon.org

For a detailed schedule, visit www.daveandbustersniagarafalls.com orwww.facebook.com/pulpcomics

Retailers/Vendors If you’d like to have a table at the event please contact Pulp Comics : info@pulpcomics.ca.

Now, this is great for the region, but the details on just who (artists, guests, exhibitors) are going to be there are pretty slim. However the presence of wrestler guest “Leaping Lanny” Poffo, the 501st Legion and the DeLorean from Back to the Future assures us this is event is styled after the “pop culture con” model.

2011 Harvey Award Nominees Announced – Cooke and Blind Ferret lead Canuck noms

Today the Harvey Awards announced their 2011 nominees for work published in 2010. The Harvey Awards are balloted awards, meaning that for a time period earlier this year industry folks could submit their selections, and now that the ballot has been selected, people now vote for their favourites from the list of nominees (reprinted below).

It appears that the Harveys do not distinguish between print and webcomics for awards that are not packaging specific.

The big nominees are Darwyn Cooke – earning 5 nominations for THE OUTFIT, and the crew from Blind Ferret who garnered a surprising 6 nominations for their webcomic THE GUTTERS. Other nominees include Kate Beaton, Kill Shakespeare, Dale Eaglesham, Noel Tuazon, Bryan Lee O’Malley and Jeff Lemire. Canadian publishers Drawn & Quarterly and Red 5 Comics had books nominated.

Now, after the tremendous response that our first podcast with Jim Zubkavich (more than 100 downloads and counting!), I am very excited to announce that our second podcast is now online!  This is our unabridged conversation with Kevin Boyd, the current director and co-founder of the Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Creator Awards.  Now in it’s seventh amazing year, the Awards were held at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo this past weekend.  I sat down with Kevin to discuss Joe Shuster, Superman, the Awards, the Canadian fans and Canada’s turbulent history with comics.  Oh, and Kevin explains this image…

And finally, the third issue of the Mosaik Project will be available as a high-res free download, right here on MONDAY,  JUNE 27′th
Expect a full issue breakdown on Monday with bios of all the contributing artists, without whom this issue literally would not have been possible.   To everyone who has supported this project from the beginning, you have my thanks and the gratitude of everyone at Ex Machina 7.  We have some very big things planned for this year and it’s 100% because so many people have embraced this project and got involved.
Unplug.

Well the last shipment of the Mosaik Project #3 has been (finally) sent out.  Toronto-area retailers should have received their shipments as early as Friday of last week.  Retailers in London and Hamilton will probably receive their shipments in 1-2 days, now that the Postal strike has been “resolved”.

Ex Machina 7 Productions would like to thank everyone who contributed to this issue:

- Adriana Blake
- William Brian MacLean
- Ramon Perez
- Ron Kasman
- Alex Novitski
and
- J.B’s Four panel film review strip.

I really recommend listening to the podcast – it was recorded in a high traffic food court by my office, so apologies for the background noise. But I had a great chat with Carlton that day and a lot of things are discussed, much of which didn’t make it into the print interview.

I met Carlton on Thursday and got a copy of the Retailer Edition, which is very well done. There are a couple of things in the print interview with me that aren’t quite right (I did not found HeroesCon, but rather drew inspiration from it back when I used to do my own cons).

Happy Canada Day! Plus… Fan Expo Canada tickets on sale.

No work, no school… backyard barbeques and visits to the cottage… it’s July 1 and it’s time to celebrate being neutral and non-confrontational!

Earlier this morning FAN EXPO CANADA tickets went on sale for the August 25-28 event in Toronto. They were supposed to start selling at 12:01 but technical glitches caused by a sudden influx of people on the site caused the servers to crash for a while, and Rogers Wireless who were also selling tickets also had some initial glitches. By about 12:45 everything was working perfectly and it’s been fine since and the angry, frustrated e-Mob quickly dissipated.
