Happenings: Toronto ComiCon upgrades in March 2012.

TORONTO COMICON as presented by FAN EXPO CANADA™ has now grown to become a spectacular 2 day event!TORONTO COMICON as presented by FAN EXPO CANADA™ has now grown to become a spectacular 2 day event!

Located in the South Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, the show will be boasting unique exhibitors, presentations, workshops and many celebrity guests. Don’t miss out on spring’s #1 community event in Toronto!

*********

That’s the announcement from the new website: Toronto Comicon – March 10-11, 2012 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

After last year’s 2-day FREE event in April Hobbystar spent a lot of time talking with fans and exhibitors about the state of the annual spring Toronto ComiCON Fan Appreciation Event and based on those conversations and a forced schedule adjustment it looks as if we are going bigger and better in 2012!

For a few reasons we’ve decided to drop “Fan Appreciation Event” from the show name and in 2012 it will be promoted as the TORONTO COMICON – A PRESENTATION OF FANEXPO CANADA (TM). Bullet points are:

* More celebrity guests! Last year there were 3, in 2012 there will be significantly more.
* More comic pro guests!
* Bigger Space! More than double the size of the 2011 event.
* Low cost admission! Daily and Weekend Rate.
* 10×10 Exhibitor Booths for half the cost of the same at Fan Expo!
* Special exhibitor rates for those who take 4 or more booths!
* Fan Expo Canada Premium Pass holders get in free!
* Low cost Artist Alley tables!
* Free admission to all kids 12 and under on this March Break weekend!

There’s a HUGE announcement just around the corner with the show dates and celebrity and comic pro guests.

Admission, according to the site is $20/day or $30 for a weekend pass.

But I can confirm some of your favourite Canadian creators will be making an appearance (see below).

Along with this news is the announcement that the February 5th one day show is being postponed as it is too close on the schedule to the revised Toronto ComiCon.

Happy Holidays

Two more days before Christmas, have you finished all of your Christmas shopping yet? I haven’t! I started wrapping some things this morning, so hopefully I’ll finish up all of the many little pre-Christmas errands tonight after work or early tomorrow morning before I start driving all around the GTA to various family events.

* I’d like to thank everyone that participated in the End of the Year Survey on Canadian Comics, we may still have some more, but there won’t be much more posted to the site until Tuesday next week. I think a lot of great points have been made, and it was great to catch up with some folks before we launch into 2012.

* We’ve got one more week of new books shipping next Wednesday before we close off the entries for eligible comics and graphic novels for the year and officially commence the nomination process for the awards.

* There are two days left in Darwyn Cooke’s Day 8 and 8.5 of his 12 Days of Christmas Auctions, he’s got some great Superman artwork and signed books available in each of the two auctions and the money will help us run the awards for 2012. He’s got many other great items available in the other auctions, and they are all for a great cause – the Hero Initiative.

* Next week the Boxing Day/Week sales commence, so why not check out your local comic book shop and see what they have on sale? Boxing Day and Week sales are big money makers for local comic book shops, and any sales they make may help make their holiday season a successful one. It’s been a tough year for independent retailers of all kinds, so let’s end the year on a positive note!

The Adventures of Tintin and his Taun Taun by Benjamin Rivers. My win from the "Toronto Draws Tintin" event. I'll definitely be checking out the Tintin movie over the break, anyone else?

Reminder: Nomination Process for the Joe Shuster Awards

As we near the end of 2011, I’m starting to get some requests such as “how do I get my book nominated for a Joe Shuster Award?” and “how can I get the Nominating Committee to consider my work?”

Well, this post will hopefully answer all of your questions.

THE NOMINATION PROCESS

The nominating committee is selected by the Executive Administrative committee and is newly reconstituted for each year of the awards. The nominating committee for the majority of awards consists of a cross-section of comic book journalists and experts from across Canada. Nominating is a three step process.

>>> Note: We’re in the process of putting the 2012 Nominating Committee now so they can begin work on choosing the nominees for 2011 in January through to end of March 2012.

STEP ONE – the Association prepares an eligible publications list with input from creators, publishers, retailers. This list is published on the website to gather feedback and identify missing work.

The list will be of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (3 years minimum current residency) and the books they worked on that were professionally distributed first printing periodicals or books that debuted between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011 in one of the following professional roles:

- Artist (illustrating a writer’s script, excluding cartoonists, can include an artist team if both are Canadian),

- Cartoonist (writing and/or adapting a story that they also illustrated),

- Cover Artist (primary cover artist, can include an artist team if both are Canadian)

- Writer (producing a script that is given to an artist, excluding cartoonists).

Books containing collections of previously published strips or comics and/or translated works into English from another language published in a previous year are not eligible.Original works in ANY language are accepted, but the primary emphasis of our investigations will be those first run books in either French or English.

Limited release books available at special events and mailed or hand-delivered to a small number of booksellers but not widely distributed to all booksellers during the eligibility time period are not eligible until they are professionally distributed by, say, Diamond Comics Dist.

STEP TWO – using the eligible comics list, the Nominating committee members are asked to submit individual “top five” lists for each category, in order of preference. Each vote is weighted based on order of preference. In other words. a first choice selection is given five points on the overall score and a fifth choice was given one point to be added to the cumulative score.

STEP THREE – the results are then logged. Selection is made initially by Majority Vote – if a creator receives a majority (50% or higher) of individual votes in a specific category they proceeded to the final ballot.

If enough nominees in a specific category have not advanced by majority vote, then we turn to the Cumulative Point Score – based on the rankings provided on each list. In the case of a tie, the number of votes received and their position on the lists submitted is taken into consideration.

D+Q goes Digital on the Kobo Vox and Beyond

D+Q Announces The Company’s “Digital Strategy”

As announced in today’s PW Daily by Calvin Reid, this holiday season, the Drawn & Quarterly classic graphic novels LOUIS RIEL A COMIC-STRIP BIOGRAPHY and PAYING FOR IT A COMIC-STRIP BIOGRAPHY ABOUT BEING A JOHN by the award-winning and iconoclastic cartoonist Chester Brown, will each be available as ebooks via KOBO’s Vox Reader, it was announced today by Peggy Burns, Associate Publisher of Marketing & Sales. Known for its astute editorial standards and high print production values, this venture marks the Montreal-based company’s first foray into the digital sphere.

“Many people assumed we would never do ebooks, whereas the opposite was true. We were open to the idea, but wanted to approach it cautiously,” said Burns. “This past Fall, we had a fortuitous series of events that brought the project to the foreground. Chester voiced his desire for ebooks, CBC Canada Reads shortlisted LOUIS RIEL in its top-ten for its annual contest, and most importantly, the fellow Canadian company Kobo inquired if we would consider ebooks. Kobo’s pitch was very friendly and nonexclusive and they promote CBC Canada Reads. They understood who we are, our hesitancy and what is important to us. It all happened very organically which is how we prefer to do business.”

D+Q production manager Tracy Hurren oversaw the project and worked with Kobo to ensure that the same care and attention D+Q gives towards its print editions was in place for the ebooks. The arrangement is nonexclusive and D+Q expects to add more titles by different authors and devices throughout 2012.

Lastly, D+Q is proud to announce that the company will be splitting the net proceeds of its ebook sales equally with its authors, and is in agreement with the Writer’s Union of Canada.

“D+Q has always been an author-centric company, it is this ethos that has shaped us into who we are today,” said Chris Oliveros, D&Q’s Publisher and Editor-In-Chief. “It only seemed natural to offer the fairest proposition to our authors.”

Darwyn Cooke’s 12 Days of Christmas help the 2012 Joe Shuster Awards

I was really surprised and honoured to see that Darwyn devoted yesterday’s Day 8 of his 12 days of Christmas auctions to assist us with our fund-raising goals for 2012.The funds from the other amazing auctions he’s prepared go to benefit the Hero Initiative, a great charity that assists veteran comics creators in need of financial assistance but these two Superman-centric auctions go towards helping us meet our fundraising goals for 2012. They include:

No guest announcements yet, but there will be postcard distribution to comic stores in BC, Alberta and Washington state on December 28, 2011. As far as I know I will be involved in the event coordinating the Canadian comic guests as well as running the comics programming, as I currently do these services for Fan Expo Canada and the Toronto ComiCONs.

While the announcement is very Hobbystar-centric, it should be noted that we are working with many members of the local comics community, including Vancouver Comicon promoter Leonard Wong, some of the folks involved in the Vancouver Comic Jams, and I’ve been in touch with the organizers of the Victoria Comic Con and VanCAF.

What’s also missing from that initial release is the involvement of the organizers of the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo who are part of this as well and will be helping to run the event, and we are also working closely with the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle.

The intention of the event is not to step on any toes or alienate anyone but to create a great event in a market that hasn’t had anything like it before.

Tom Fowler on Hulk: Season One, Ramon Perez on John Carter: The Gods of Mars in 2012

Tom Fowler will be illustrating the Fred Van Lente written Hulk: Season One graphic novel. Comic Book Resources caught up with Fowler and Van Lente for some details.

Tom Fowler: Personally I’m a huge fan of the OGN model. The idea of getting a book and a larger complete story is very, very appealing to me because I’ve done things in the past where I’ve come in in the middle of a story line and I’ve left before it’s over. You never get a real sense of ownership that way. You don’t get a sense of, “This is a thing that I did.” It’s more a, “These are parts of a thing that I did part of.”

Hulk: Season One is expected in stores in September 2012.

Ramon Perez, fresh off the A Tale of Sand graphic novel, will be illustrating the five part mini-series John Carter: The Gods of Mars for Marvel Comics, which is set to debut in March 2012. The mini is written by Sam Humphries (Sacrifice), and is an adaptation of the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Darwyn Cooke news

Earlier in the month, Strange Adventures in Halifax held a special release party for Parker: The Martini Edition, even creating a unique Parker commemorative martini glass. Photos now online!

Darwyn has started his annual 12 Days of Christmas auctions to benefit the Hero Initiative. Some amazing pieces and packages were sold last year, so expect the same this year, and it’s all for a very worthy cause! DAY ONE, DAY TWO.

PS I received Darwyn’s response to the wrap survey today, so I’ll be formatting it and posting it here on Thursday.
