No other Canadian creators were nominated in 2012. No Canadians were nominated or won any Stan Lee Awards earlier in the month at the Kapow! comic con in London either, so they hardly get a mention here.

About the Eagle Awards

Introduced in 1976, the Eagles are the comics industry’s longest established awards. Acknowledged as the pre-eminent international prizes, they have been featured on the covers of leading US and UK titles across the last 28 years ranging from Uncanny X-Men and Swamp Thing to MAD and 2000 AD.

Unique in the comics industry in that they reflect both the professional and the reader’s choice, the Eagle Awards comprise of two distinct stages:

(i) A Nominations Form allows the entire comics community to choose their favourites.

(ii) The top five nominations then appear on the voting form for the readers and fans to choose from, thus focusing the fans with no wasted votes.

New Vancouver Festival seeks to celebrate independent cartoonists

May 21, 2012 Vancouver, B.C. — Independent cartoonists and artists from around North America will be gathering in Yaletown this week as local organizers host the inaugural Vancouver Comic Arts Festival (VanCAF), a first-of-its kind gathering that hopes to become one of the major creative events on the city’s calendar.

Modeled after similar events in Toronto and Portland, the weekend festival will bring together over 90 cartoonists, illustrators, comic book artists, and creative professionals for two days of exhibitions, events, and networking. Free to attend and open to the public, VanCAF will offer Vancouver fans a chance to meet numerous stars of the indie art scene including famed web cartoonist Jeph Jacques (Questionable Content), B.C.-based pop artist Camilla d’Errico (Tanpopo), and noted comic illustrator Nina Matsumoto (The Simpsons Comic),  as well as dozens of local underground, independent, and mainstream illustrators eager to show off their work.

“Too often shows of this nature tend to put more focus on TV and film, leaving the artists as merely a side-show.  This is a fantastic opportunity for Vancouverites of all ages to connect with the myriad artistic talents in our own backyard,” says VanCAF organizer Shannon Campbell.

“Our event will highlight some the best work being done by many cartoonists and illustrators—mostly from Vancouver, but also hailing from as far as Los Angeles, Toronto, and New York City.”

VanCAF will run from Saturday, May 26 (10 am to 5 pm) to Sunday, May 27 (10 am to 6 pm), at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown, Vancouver.

The ceremony for the 8th Annual Awards Canadian comic book creators will be held on September 15, 2012 at the Montreal Comic Con.

Toronto (Canada), May 9, 2012. From coast to coast, Canada is home to many of the comic book industry’s top talents, and the JOE SHUSTER AWARDS are a way of recognizing and celebrating their achievements. Since it was established in 2004, the Joe Shuster Award program has been Canada’s national awards program for recognizing the outstanding achievements of Canadian comic book creators, publishers and retailers. The juried awards are named after pioneering Toronto-born artist Joe Shuster who, along with writer Jerry Siegel, created the iconic super-powered hero, Superman.

In April of this year, the nominees were chosen from lists comprising all eligible titles published during the year 2011 *, by Canadian citizens living at home or abroad and Canadian permanent residents **. Now that the nominees have been selected, their works will be evaluated by different juries who will determine winners in each category.

Winners will be announced during a public ceremony on the evening of Saturday, September 15, 2012, at the Montreal Comic Con, which takes place from September 14-16, 2012 at the Palais de Congres (Montreal).

The Dragon Award – Comics for Kids

This award recognizes the works which capture the attention and fascination of young readers, and help to create a passion for life-long reading. With the permission of his estate, the Joe Shuster Awards are named in honor of the great artist, JOE SHUSTER (1914-1992), whose clear, dynamic style and inventive visual flourishes set the standard for graphic storytelling during the infancy of the North American comic book industry. It was Superman, a co-creation of Shuster and Siegel, which electrified the industry 71 years ago and, almost overnight, transformed comic books into an enormous pop-cultural phenomenon that endures to this day.

La cérémonie de remise des 8^e prix annuels des auteurs canadiens de bandes dessinées se tiendra le 15 septembre 2012 au Montreal Comic Con.

Toronto (Canada), le 9 mai 2012. D’un océan à l’autre, le Canada peut se targuer de compter en ses rangs une foule d’auteurs de bandes dessinés comptant parmi les plus talentueux de la profession, et les Prix Joe Shuster entendent bien reconnaître et célébrer leurs réalisations. Depuis sa création en 2004, le programme des Prix Joe Shuster a été le grand programme national de prix visant à reconnaître les réalisations des auteurs et des éditeurs de bandes dessinées canadiens, tout comme le travail des libraires en assurant la présentation au public. Ces prix ont été nommés en l’honneur de Joe Shuster, cet artiste-pionnier originaire de Toronto à qui l’on doit le légendaire Superman, cet inoubliable super-héros qu’il a créé en compagnie du scénariste Jerry Siegel.

Au mois de janvier de cette année, les nominés ont été choisis à partir de listes comprenant tous les titres éligibles publiés au cours de l’année 2011*, et à ces nominations étaient éligibles tous les citoyens canadiens habitant au pays ou à l’étranger, ainsi que les résidents permanents**. Maintenant que les nominés sont choisis, leurs œuvres seront évaluées par différents jurys qui auront à déterminer les gagnants dans chaque catégorie.

Les gagnants seront annoncés au cours d’une cérémonie publique qui se tiendra le soir du samedi 15 septembre 2012, à l’occasion du Montreal Comic Con, événement se déroulant du 14 au 16 septembre 2012 au Palais de Congrés (Montreal).

À propos de Joe Shuster (1914 – 1992)

Avec la permission de ses ayant-droits, les Prix Joe Shuster sont nommés en l’honneur de Joe Shuster (1914-1992), ce grand artiste dont le style clair, dynamique, et les compositions inventives et théâtrales ont établi le jalon de la narration graphique aux débuts du comic book nord-américain. Ce fut Superman, créé avec Jerry Siegel, qui électrisa ce marché voici déjà 71 ans ; qui, presque du jour au lendemain, transforma les comics books en un gigantesque phénomène de la culture pop qui dure toujours aujourd’hui.

À propos des Prix Joe Shuster

Les Prix Joe Shuster est un programme national de reconnaissance pour les Canadiens œuvrant dans le domaine de la bande dessinée, du roman graphique et de la bande dessinée en ligne, sans restrictions de langue, de contenu et/ou de genre. Les auteurs nominés le sont pour leur travail réalisé au cours de l’année précédente. Les Prix Joe Shuster mettent également à l’honneur les gens qui publient et vendent des bandes dessinées. Les prix du Libraire et de l’Auto-édition sont attribués en fonction des candidatures soumises. Le programme des Prix Joe Shuster est géré par la Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association, un organisme sans but lucratif fondé en 2004.
