With the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo this weekend, Terence Leung (of the Calgary Herald) writes about comic book creators that have come from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Featured in the article, Fiona Staples, Marcus To and Laurie Breitkreuz.

Also mentioned in this article: Todd McFarlane, John Byrne, Andrew Foley, Riley Rossmo and Cary Nord.

As movies such as Iron Man, Sin City and the upcoming Wolverine film rack up huge dollar signs in the theatres, it’s well documented the appeal of comic books are no longer for the nerdy, pocket-protector equipped basement dweller folk.

Comic book talent has come through Calgary such as Spawn creator Todd Mc-Farlane and John Byrne of X-Men fame, but a growing number of artists are finding success independently or with large publishers such as DC, Top Cow and Marvel.

Fiona Staples, a recent visual communications graduate at Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD), has both feet in the independent publishing world in Calgary and also as an artist for publisher Wild-Storm–which is owned by DC Comics, home of Batman and Superman.
