As the members of the CCBCAA Executive have been talking and working with the community about ways in which to raise public awareness of Canadian comic book creators and their work, we’ve also been talking with teachers and librarians about how we can help them identify suitable works to promote to students and younger readers.
For that purpose, one of the two new awards that will debut in 2009 is the Joe Shuster “Comics for Kids” Award / Prix de “Bandes Dessinées pour Enfants”.
The “Comics for Kids” Award / Prix de “Bandes Dessinées pour Enfants” recognizes the works which capture the attention and fascination of young readers, and help to create a passion for life-long reading. Works considered for this award are comic books and graphic novels by Canadian creators that are targetted at readers 14 and under.
Nominees for this award will be selected from the eligible creators lists by a team of educators led by Jennifer Stewart, MA, B.Ed., who is also the proprieter of Guelph, Ontario’s The Dragon comic book shop. In turn, this juried award will also be selected by an independant team of educators and librarians from across Canada, after giving thorough consideration to the nominated works.
As with the other Joe Shuster Awards, nominees will be for new work published in either English or French.
