Toronto Cartoonists Workshop March Update

TCW Upcoming Comics News and Events

Part of the mandate of the Toronto Cartoonists Workshop is to keep students informed and involved with comics events and happenings in and around the GTA. Please find below some upcoming items we recommend.

First of all I want to thank everyone who came out to the Guy Davis Exhibit and Workshop at the Gladstone on February 27th or attended the Toronto ComiCON on the 28th where Guy was signing and sketching. Both events were very well attended and we hope to have Guy back for another future event. Exhibit organizer Sean Menard still has original art by Guy available on his website at http://www.artoriginals.ca . A gorgeous letterpress print was produced for the show in an edition of 100 and we recommend you check out the site to take a look.

You may want to mark June 5th and 6th on your calendars as the Toronto ComiCON will be holding their Fan Appreciation Event on those dates and we will be assisting with workshops and programming as well as launching a new exhibition and workshop at the Gladstone for Art Originals. Watch for details at: http://www.hobbystar.com/upcomingevents/index.html
Guests for both events will be announced soon.

I would also like to point out that the 2010 version of the Toronto Comic Art Festival isn’t far off. Our friends at the Beguiling put on an amazing show and you shouldn’t miss it. TCAF takes place on May 8th and 9th at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St.. Admission to the event is FREE! Visiting luminaries attending thus far include Dan Clowes, Jim Woodring and James Sturm. For a full list of guests and event details visit: http://torontocomics.com/

Toronto Cartoonists Workshop instructor Paul Rivoche will be set up at TCAF again this year and will have copies of his sketchbooks and prints for sale. To see more of Paul’s work go to: http://www.rocketfiction.com/ . Paul taught “The Art of Background Design” for us last July and we hope to have him back again sometime in 2010 if his schedule permits.

If art comics are your thing we also recommend the upcoming lecture with Gary Panter. It is part of the Faculty of Design Speaker Series and takes place Thursday March 25, 2010 at 6:30pm in the Ontario College of Art & Design Auditorium. On April 26th autobio comics wunderkind Jeffrey Brown will attend the lecture Graphically Speaking: Jeffrey Brown’s UNDELETED SCENES at the North York Central Library. The NYCL is located at 5120 Yonge St. (at North York TTC). The talk begins at 6:30 and runs to 8:30. It is free to attend and is sponsored by the Beguiling and TCAF.

If animation is your thing we remind you of the Sheldon Cohen Retrospective put on by the Toronto Animated Image Society. It takes place Saturday, March 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the NFB Mediateque at 150 John St. TAIS runs regular workshops and meetups for animators at their headquarters at 60 Atlantic Ave. Check out their website for more info: http://www.tais.ca/

Finally I should mention that Toronto Cartoonists Workshop mainstay instructor Ty Templeton will be attending the upcoming Wizard World Toronto show as a Special Guest. When Ty is not at his table you can find him at the Wizard booth from 1-2 on Friday and 4-5 on Saturday. The Toronto Cartoonists Workshop will not be exhibiting at the WizardWorld Toronto show, but hope if you are attending that you will drop by Ty’s table and say hello. In the meantime for all things Ty Templeton check out his site at: http://tytempletonart.wordpress.com/

If you have an art or comics related event that you think would be of interest please feel free to drop us a line at info@cartoonistsworkshop.com and we will try to include it in our next community newsletter.

Cheers.
